ethernet hello all. Im finally getting cable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 and i cant be more excited. Im simply wondering...is there a difference in ethernet cards from lets say a nine dollar one to a 15 dollar one? im not looking for wireless or anything, but suggestions on something to get the most from my upcomming new connection would really be appreciated. thanks again all. |
Hi. I am not sure of all the differences, but I would stick with a 3COM unit. You can get one off www.newegg.com. Here is the one I got for $31.00 3COM ethernet card |
ummm do u have to buy something to hook up ur cable to a pc...or cant u just plug it in the back of ur comp??? and with macs isnt their an ethernet port in the back?? |
You hook cable up via the ethernet card and the cable modem. Yes, some computers come with built in ethernet cards. |
so when i get cable will they do all that for me??? |
hey, thanks for the replies. BeeF FlaPs, ill keep 3COM in mind as i knw they are a good brand. Im about to go to Best Buy to check on some network cards right now. thanks again and ill see you all soon with less than 100 ping. ha, later..... |
Linksys makes a Eithernet card too. I myself have my cable connection through USB, but that is still slower than the Eithernet card. |
Use USB2.0 ports...you may have more luck with the speed that way any network is only as fast as its slowest component so get something that does the job and some extra!!! A 10MBit/s card should be fine for up to a 1mbit line without lag etc and still allowing for any LAN traffic that you may have.. Are you going to be using a Hub/switch or a router in your solution... |
LinkSYS is awsome and cheap, keep in mind that expensive is not always the best. |
hi and thanks for the extra suggestions actually yes i was thinking about going with a hub to share the interenet it another computer..wireless for the other...wired for mine. however, the other computer is quite old and i screwed up the installation of the wireless card ..nowit wont even connect to the interent with its modem :(. im going to try to reinstall today thanks again! |
what kind of cable company you ordered optimum or earthlink etc..... |
earthlink actually. priovided by time warner cable co its soo fast and now i actually have the wireless router set up, the wireless card on the other computer set up...but i still have a problem the other comp with the wireless network card still tried to connect using the modem i actually took out, now netscape says something like "could not open network port..not enough resources or restart windows etc etc. could someone please help me set up the browsers on that comp to work with the LAN card to recieve the data? i know the car itself is recieving it because it has a monitor which tells its frequency strength etc...just the browsers wont connect...detect network setting blah blah blah anyways, thanks in advance, everyone here is always quite helpful :) |
