Default Editing Sounds

A few questions from a bigtime newbie...

First, is it better to create a separate pk3 to edit sounds, or to just drop sounds into your musicandsounds.pk3 file in your base folder? (For my own personal use)

Second, if one chooses the former, does one need a utility to make the game use one's new sounds, or will they be recognized automatically?

Third, if one chooses the latter, and one has already changed many of the gunfire sounds using this method, any ideas on why the game won't recognize new sounds for bullet impacts on metal and wood?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've found that when adding a new pk3 file, the sounds are automatically recognized. However, I still have the same problem with the game not using my sounds for bullet impacts and now, spent casings as well. How come it only works with the guns?
