Default Not convinced to get this game

I'm interested, but I'm not entirely convinced that I should get this game. Maybe you guys can help me out.

In the short demo that I played, I noticed some things I didnt like
1. Tech tree was limited.
Techs didnt seem to change gameplay that much. You could also build capital ships before researching half the frigates or any of the cruisers. Does the full game have a deeper tech tree?

2. Colonization and building of infrastructure seemed a bit quick. Just send a colony ship out, it sends a few drop pods and suddenly the planet is producing income. Also, why cant you build research stations over uninhabitable planets? In fact, why cant you build anything anywhere? Also, why do asteroids over uninhabitable areas have mysteriously abandoned but usable mining facilities?

3. Command and Control seemed...unstable. For some reason, one of my battle cruisers would alway head toward a specific allied planet without orders and without phase jumping. I'd tell it to join a fleet, which it would, but then it would turn around and go back to that planet.
When moving the camera around (mouse to the edge of the screen), sometimes the camera would move in a direction opposite to the direction indicated by the mouse movement. I assume this is because the camera was backwards in relation to an arbitrary reference point (like up would always be in that direction).
I will give the game credit for seeming like a 3d control enviroment because of the map's rotation while remaining in 2d.

4. As I said before, I didnt like how battleships came before cruisers. To expand this thought, I felt that there should be something bigger keeping me from making a massive fleet of capitalships (besides the pop cap thing). I felt that heavier ships should have to rely on smaller escorts being faster, intercepting strike craft and missiles that would otherwise leave the capital ship undefended to some weakness. Yes, I realize that you can build more frigates than battleships, but it just seemed like something was missing here.

5.I know that this game is very moddable, but how many finished mods are out there? I know of the 7 deadly sins one, which appears to try to add every sci-fi faction but only add a few standard ones and create the rest from scratch. I also know there is a star wars one using the same models from the warlords mod (homeworld 2), and maybe a star trek mod too. What else is there?

I come from playing a very good 4x space game that came out back in '06 called Sword of the Stars. Maybe I'm used to the depth and complexity that this game has while retaining a simple interface, and maybe this has left me biased toward Sins.

Like I said, maybe there things are fixed in the full game, maybe this game isn't for me. What do you guys think?

Default Re: Not convinced to get this game

I haven't played the game ALL that much but I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

1. Well I don't know how different the actual game is from the demo but the upgrades give subtle differences IMO, but an army of capital ships won't help against my Guardians.

2. Well colonization doesn't give you income just like that. It actually takes away money until you can get several upgrades for it before the planet makes a profit. also you can't build a building if you have nobody to work on it. also the abandoned facilities will work into your own back story anyway (its not a story game)

3. I'm guessing those are bugs in the demo.

4. there is something going against your capital ships, other capital ships. I'm guessing its because your going against the AI who can't use their capital ships effectively and would rather bum rush you with planet bombers.

5.

hope this helps. I also recomend you look at the review by antisocialfatman on youtube.

Well, SOTS, thuogh an excelent game, is a totally different game than this game. Turn-based vs. real-time. Tactical vs strategic.

Personally I think Sword is better for a really long epic strategic game, whereas Sins is better for multiplayer and "semi-"quick games, and just blowin (you-know-what) up.

I still haven't tried SOTS. Just started playing around with mods for Sins, and I have to say, some of the mods out there for it are incredible. Sacrifice of Angels 2 is pretty incredible, even if it is Star Trek. :P
