Default stupid CD problem

Installed Sims2 Deluxe. Worked fine. Installed University. Refused to start, with the stupid error message "You are running the wrong version of The Sims 2. Please run The Sims(TM) 2 Deluxe instead."

Put the Sims2 Deluxe CD in. Still had the wrong version.

Turns out, the expansion does not work from the expansion icon on the @#%^& desktop, or with the @#$%&^ expansion CD. You just put the base game CD in, and start the base game. The expansion content is already included.

This is not what the instructions say. Did the (official) online "support" forums have the answer? No (that it was easy to find, anyway). Had to go to google and get the answer from people who had the same problem.

Yeah, they goof-balled some of that up. They have it where you need to use the last released cd to run the game, however, it's where some of the last expansions were released before the deluxe edition so you don't use the expansion to run the game.

Besides, the game doesn't run off the CD, they are only checking to make sure you're not a thief (as if that made any difference to the real thieves). If they are going to be that [insert insult of choice], how hard could it be to make it so *any* legitimate CD works?

The technical answer may be that the CDs use different "copy protection" software, so they could not make that work. The real answer is they are only alienating their paying customers.

Heh, true. Legally, we should be able to make a copy of our bought programs as a backup in case the original cd fails or is lost/destroyed. Try making a backup of any copy-protected cd...
