anytime i pause the game or buy items and then return back to live mode the characters are frozen.

i also can't save a game or go back to the neighborhood without getting a windows error and losing everything i've done.

is there anything i can do?

Have you tried any scans, like spyware, Registry scans etc etc,, or if you have any hacked objects and such can cause problems with your game, but try the scans first, like registry, for some reason it can be a big problem and mess with your game, it did mine and like everyone knows, reg scan is part of my big advice to people, try it out and see if you can scan and fix problems with your registry, then try and play and see if that helps...

That 'frozen after buying something, and returning to live mode' sounds like a corrupt object. Does this happen one one lot, or the whole game, wherever? What is the wording of the windows error message that you're getting? What does it say? How much RAM does your computer have? Not having enough RAM or virtual memory can cause massive in-game slow-downs, and provoke windows error messages too.

"The Sims Hot Date has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" was the error message. This happens on every lot, and happens no matter what i buy. 504 MB of RAM.

This sounds like you have some serious corruption in your games files somewheres. The game is unable to perform it's basic functions at this point. I'd suggest an un-install, and re-install. Get Simeraser: http://thesims.ea.com/us/support/simseraser.html And run the program 4-5 times, you need to do that to make sure it gets everything. Then check on the 'C:/Program Files/Maxis/Sims' folder, if it's still there, delete it. Before running Simeraser though, If you want to save anything, skins houses downloads whatever:
Quote:

Make a copy of your downloads folder if you want to keep your objects.

Make a copy of your Skins folder if you want to keep your skins.

User data folders contain the families and houses from your game, so if you want any of them, copy those folders too.

I would take a quick look through all your folders to see if you added files into any of them -- for instance, did you download any Walls and Floors, too? Be sure to copy them as well. In fact, if you have the room on your hard drive copy everything! You don't have to put it all back in your game, but this way you'll have a backup of the whole thing incase the re-install doesn't go well.

And yes, after you've copied everything, drag your Sims folder to the trash.
Good luck
