Newer ATI drivers don't work properly...

I badly need some advice regarding how to upgrade the drivers for my ATI card.

The last best version of the drivers that work for me was Catalyst v.7.12, posted for public download on Dec. 20, 2007.

I follow ATI's instructions EXACTLY in regards to uninstalling the old drivers, and then installing the newer ones. Each newer version SEEMS to work in regards to desktop/movie functions, but when it comes to starting up STALKER, the game doesn't load any further than the initial graphic of the crouching gasmasked STALKER holding his rifle; it "freezes" there and then I get an Xray Engine Error window that shows up, but instead of displaying any kind of informative text, the Error report's screen is simply solid black.

If I play a game other than STALKER, the chance that I'll receive a VGA-type error significantly increases.

This doesn't make sense to me. If I uninstall the newer drivers and install the older one (v.7.12), the game loads up and is playable, and I don't ever receive a VGA-type error. But, from what I've read, the lastest Catalyst drivers (v.8.5) speedup and enhance STALKER's performance significantly, so, needless to say, I want to upgrade.

There's a part of me that suspects that the old driver is not being completely uninstalled, but I'm unsure of this...

Before I go, I've downloaded/installed a highly recommended registry-type cleaning program called EasyCleaner. I have the latest build, but I am not exactly sure how to use it. Should I use Windows to uninstall the graphics card driver, then run EasyCleaner to see if there's anything being left behind? And if the registry shows that ATI files are still there, is it okay for me to have EasyCleaner delete them? If so, is it then safe for me to install the latest ATI driver, or...?


Before I go, if there are any third party ATI drivers that have been created that are HIGHLY recommended and stable, I certainly wouldn't mind giving them a shot, especially in light of how strenuously I'm struggling with the current situation with ATI's official product.

I don't know "easy cleaner" and I don't own an ATI card anymore, but you might want to try the Omega drivers:
OmegaDrivers.net - Home of the ATI & NVIDIA Omega Drivers. ATI

I used them when I had an ATI in my laptop. They are also for desktops though.

Then there is this tool (not freeware) advertised by Tech News, Reviews & Articles - DriverHeaven.net :

After the 7.12, almost all of ATI's drivers have been focused on the Radeon HD series, providing benefits for those cards over the X19xx series. Honestly, I'd sell that card, buy a 4850 or 4870 and call it a day.

I was in your position once too with my X1950Pro and said **** it and bought a Radeon HD 3870, could not have been happier with my decision either.. Running Crysis maxed out since the 8.3's and loving it!

Thanks for all the helpful feedback guys. I'd love, LOVE to get a new Radeon card, but my system's going on four years old, and is stuck with an AGP connection. That, and having no money with a baby on his way in two weeks, makes this a difficult situation that's going to remain difficult in regards to playing any newer titles.

But I am having a baby on his way, and...

...Atrocious' advice regarding a thorough cleaning of the registry was right on the money. There had to have been over three dozen files found after the "uninstall". Pretty pathetic how much crap was left behind. And now the card works properly again!

Atrocious, you're so helpful around here, and you contribute so much to the community, maybe you should change your screen name to Precious?
