I know this isn't very helpful to you guys, but I just do not believe that something is wrong with S.T.A.L.K.E.R., unless you have a bad bootleg copy or something. I've installed ShoC/OL2.2 across multiple systems and OSes ('cause I reload software and upgrade hardware fairly frequently) and have never had these sorts of problems. You should make sure your OS is sorted out properly and that you have the latest available drivers for your video, sound, etc. and the latest DirectX update (Aug 2009 last time I checked). Also the game should rewrite user.ltx from the built-in backup copy if the file is missing, so something odd is happening there. Maybe it doesn't have proper permissions for the public documents folder?

At any rate, after that's all sorted out, do a complete uninstall of STALKER, and manually delete the program folder as well as the STALKER-SHOC folder in public documents (all users\documents), then do a clean install and patch to 1.0005 or 1.0006. Download the ORIGINAL OL2.2 installer and see how it goes. Really, it ain't rocket science.

I too have installed it 4 computers since it came out, the latest being the second program after firewall and anti-virus. I have had almost no issues with the vanllia version or most of the mods I play. The issues always come up after I myself tweak the files and settings. At that point, all responsibility of any issues that arise, are on me, FULLY. Not the creators of the mods or GSC.

Yes, there are issues with the vanilla versions of all games, but not always alot. But even most of those are due to computer OS software and some hardware problems.

I do believe software designers can't possibly beta test a game for all hardware/OS/software combinations out there. And sometimes I think they may under state the game requirements so as to provide more sales. I say this since first playing a game like RTCW on the machine I had way back then met tje high level of suggested hardware but it struggled. Now with the machine I have now, it runs flawlessly.

This computer I have is high end, System Type x64-based PC. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz, 2668 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 9.00 GB, Total Virtual Memory 18.0 GB, Page File Space 9.28 GB, Nvidia GE Force GTX 260..

but I still have some fps issues at times like I did way back in the RTCW days. I believe in 3 - 4 years, I will have a machine that WILL run SOC with no fps issues or crashes, (except for the ones I cause by my constant file tweakings)

I believe the game is so complicated, with all the AI running free, the large size of the maps, the interaction with the AI, the interactions of AI with other AI (NPC's if you like), not to mention the dynamic weather and anomalies, it is just going to have problems no matter what. There is an awful lot going on during the game for even the best computers to handle.

Not to mention all the changes that WE do to the files and to the mods we run, a lot of errors may be self induced. I for one change a lot, including the mods I use. Do I induce errors and crashes, Oh No, Not Me! Of course I do. I think I spend as much if not more time modding the game than playing it!

Crashes suck, there is no doubt about it, especially if I haven’t saved for a bit. But like a sick addiction, I always keep coming back to play Stalker. The crashes being equivalent to a bad hangover, swearing I will never play this game again. But of course, There I am playin again the next night, tweakin the files to get the “Perfect Game” and cursing at each freeze and CTD. Stalkerholsm is an incurable addiction. And I am a Stalkerholic.

So, funny thing: I just bought this off Steam, and went to play it. Imagine my surprise when it crashes every single time. I'm not using that exotic an OS, Vista 64-bit. To repeat: there have been no modifications to this game whatsoever. The game, as downloaded from Steam, crashes on startup.
