Imho OL2.2 is the best mod to change the gameplay, fixing bugs, adding features etc. Then you can try to add Sky4ce Graphics or Float32 shaders for the graphics.
Of course this is just my personal opinion and it also depends on the type of player you are. E.g. do you want a fast action shooter or something that focuses more on realism?
If i could suggest, use OL 2.2 + Arsenal RC1 you'll have to download a total of three mod 7z files but the end result gives you over 55 new guns, new AI , more game play, and more interesting game play than just the vanilla versions. (oh and if you do decide to get the mods & the merger don't forget you need to be running 1.0005 or 1.0004.)
A mod that I find harder then OL and better (just my opinion as it seems to have more features and it has the news system that i wanted so badly) is simbion. It changes both AI and gameplay along with other things.
Alright, ive messed around with some mods and decided to ask which ones stick close to original gameplay but fix bugs. This game is kinda frustrating in that ive made it all the way to Agroprom without much idea how everything works.
What are the bolts for?
Trading is kinda weird. Can you just flat out buy something or do you have yo offer up items as well?
The artifacts dont seem to be worth the effort to keep using anti-rad. I seem to run out of life at very bad times while using artifacts.
They trigger anomalies, if you throw them into them. But since in vanilla Stalker the anomalies have quite obvious visual effects, it's not really necessary to use bolts.

Your money and the money of the NPC is shown on the trade window. If have enough money, you can buy stuff straight away. On the other hand, the NPC needs enough money so you can sell him stuff. If he doesn't, you could first buy something from him. Traders like Barkeep and the first guy that you meet in the game have infinite money.

Not all artifacts have radiation. Some have other negative effects, some have no negative effects. Just look at their stats and find good combinations of artifacts that eqaulize the negative effects of each other. (In the beginning of the game, you will probably not find those artifacts and combinations)
