Tutorials for making equipment icons?

I'm attempting to make weapon icons for some of my favorite weapon reskins, (like Mattressi's AK74su & Siro's AKM-47), but i keep running into some problems. I have DDS Converter 2.1, but everytime i convert the ui_icon_equipment file, touch it up, then convert it back to dds format, i lose image quality and the equipment icons end up with a black background in the inventory grid. I could use some help here, or even a tutorial.

I know the author's of Carry Mod 3 & the Anti-gas Armor mod have created new equipment icons. Someone has to know where to redirect me here...

You need something that can edit .dds files without converting them or else they will loose transparency and look like crap.

The file is called "ui_icon_equipment.dds" It's in Textures/UI.

Here's a link to a post a made a long while ago, it includes what it looks like, but the white lines are there to show how the grid system works.
