Regarding calibers I was bored and did some research into the various calibers, most of which you see in stalker. I was always interested in 5.45 vs 5.56 especially.
First off, the 5.56 as you know is the standard NATO cartridge and obviously bigger than the 5.45, and yes it does generate more energy and has more penetration BUT the 5.45 has more stopping power because it has a tumble effect doing massive damage to flesh and creating a much greater wound than the 5.56. So basically the 5.56 has more effective range and penetration but less stopping power.
Then there's the 7.62 NATO which has both more stopping power and effective range than either of these bullets. It's mostly used in battle rifles and it's not ideally for close quarter combat since weapons firing it tend to have a lot of kickback. The most comparable round to this is the 9x39 which is a really unique round. It's very similar to the 7.62 but has more grain and travels at sunsonic speeds, eliminating the sonic boom and making it an ideal choice for stealth kills, but the round travels significantly slower obviously and therefor has less effective range. Both of these rounds have good penetration and I don't know if the 9x39 has more penetration but it's certainly noted more.
Basically, I think it's logical for most overhauls that have a heavy focus on weapon balance to take these into consideration. As in, 5.45 weapons should generally do more damage but have less penetration and accuracy. 7.62 NATO should pretty much always be ahead of both in terms of accuracy and damage, but obviously less handling and RoF. 9x39, if possible should travel slower and be less accurate than a 7.62 NATO weapon but have similar penetration and damage. |
