They are brainwashed into blindly believing, following, and defending the farce that is the Monolith.

From what I remember, they're just regular Stalkers who got too close, and instead of getting their brain melted, they were converted to defend the secret of the Zone, so this Monolith faction was created.

Them worshiping it the way they do is probably of their own free will.
