L'Etudiant January 2nd, 2003 01:49 PM

27, and my first computer was a Heathkit H-89 running CP/M.

Now, I'm trying to convince my wife to allow me to build a couple of new machines for home... as well as run a T-1 into the house so I can host my own server. ;d

Oh... and I played the original overhead-looking sort-of-sideways Castle Wolfenstein on my Commodore 64. Pre-Wolf 3D.

Dark Lotus January 2nd, 2003 07:02 PM

How much does a T1 run? I thought it goes for like 10g's a month. That s what we were paying at a small college here in NJ. And where abouts in NJ are you? I'm in northern NJ.....

apocalypse_kid January 2nd, 2003 10:17 PM

Hi Dark Lotus,

T1 is the measure of the speed of the connection, not the amount of data transferred over a month. T1 is 1.544 mbps. T3 is 45 Mbps. Your monthly limit is generally whatever the user pays the carrier for. T1 should be fast enough to host a decent multiplayer game of BF1942.

Have fun

:cya: :cya: :cya:

L'Etudiant January 3rd, 2003 06:59 AM

I'm in Somerset county, Lotus.

Apocalypse, he was referring to cost. "10gs a month" = $10,000/month.

Actually, from several "local providers" here in Somerset (though the copper is still owned by Verizon), you can get a full T-1 for around $1,000/month. My business is debating upgrading from an IDSL line to fractional T-1 service (768kbps throughput) for $590 or so per month through speakeasy.net.

And yes, a T-1 puts through 1.544Mbps... which is more than fast enough, barring latency issues upstream, for hosting a decent sized server.

IJTF_Avenger January 3rd, 2003 04:04 PM

Surprising

It's kind of surprising to me seeing that majority of gamers who voted at 16-25. When I'm playing I usually find that most of the people on the server I play in are in their mid 30's and 40's.

apocalypse_kid January 3rd, 2003 06:47 PM

Oh, right!

Sorry I'm in Australia, we don't use that term ever, only see it in movies and stuff so it didn't click.

10-15 thousand a month should get you T3 depending on your provider. You should be able to get a limited T1 connection for 1,000 a month. I think the 10,000 is probably for unlimited data as well as the T1 speed. You can move a lot of data in a month using a T1

And that's an interesting point IJTF_Avenger. What you may find though is that the age range we are getting here is more likely the age group that uses online forums, discussion groups and chat rooms than the age group that plays games. So consider the age group that uses these forum to be biased in favour of the younger game players. Except ppl like me that is

Rathius January 3rd, 2003 09:29 PM

I live in Camden County

L'Etudiant January 4th, 2003 06:30 PM

The $1,000 price quote was no usage cap. Speakeasy.net doesn't put usage caps on their lines (thankfully). But since that's not money I have to spare at the moment despite two fairly healthy salaries coming into the home, you can imagine that the wife nixed it. Though if I could justify it by splitting the cost with other people...

I wish I could drop $10K a month on something as frivolous as a T3 line for a gaming server. It would mean I would be able to help resolve world hunger. And buy myself a kick-tush game system, since my current rig isn't what one would call top-of-the-line.

Off-topic rant... what the heck is Gates *doing* with all his money? What's the use in *having* that much?

Rathius January 4th, 2003 07:57 PM

He just wants to brag to his pitiful amount of "friends" that he is richer than all the countries in the United Nations combined...

Dark Lotus January 4th, 2003 09:29 PM

I'm in Passiac Co. Not the ghetto part of it, the part that borders NY State. I meant g as in grand and I also added an extra zero to that; woops. Anyway, I can't see a good enough reason to have a T1 for a house. With that 1 thousand a month, I'd rather buy a Kia Sephia and drive it into my lake. That would be alot more fun.

RTCW_RENEGADE\ January 20th, 2003 06:16 AM

ow, that sucks

Dark Lotus February 16th, 2003 12:27 PM

Amazing right? that was the price of a cheap car then....

L'Etudiant February 17th, 2003 06:44 AM

$8,499 was not the price of a "cheap" car... you could buy a very *good* car for that in '89.

Note the fine print: Monitor and mouse not included!

apocalypse_kid February 17th, 2003 07:49 AM

Yeah that sucks aye, the damn retailers always do that so they can get a few hundred dollars off the advertised price, then when you open the box you realise you aint got a monitor and you gotta go back and give them another $3,000 for a monitor   and probably $300 for a mouse, lifes sucks big time

 :cya:  :cya:

22 inches of white stuff here in Somerset County. Pleasant as long as you don't have to drive with the folks who don't know how to drive on it.

(I grew up on the CT shore, so this was regular snowfall for me... noone down here seems to have a clue.)

Puba February 18th, 2003 02:33 PM

im 13, and my 14th birthday is tommorrow. I've got to be the youngest clan leader in the world!

Dark Lotus February 18th, 2003 04:01 PM

I'm in Passiac County, on the NJ/NYS border... We got 26". I think our state doesn't know how to drive, whether weather (hehe) is a factor or not....

Dark Lotus February 18th, 2003 04:50 PM
