Recently there was a smaller shooting at a mall over in Oregon though it had only three fatalities, including the gunman. This was an unfortunate piece of news to wake up to today though. This is an elementary/primary school.
Multiple Fatalities Reported in Shooting at Connecticut Elementary School

Eighteen children were killed on Friday morning in a shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., about 65 miles northeast of New York City, according to a person who had been briefed on the shooting. Another law enforcement official said preliminary reports suggested there could be as many as 20 fatalities.
One state official said that an adult gunman was believed to be dead in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman was in possession of at least two firearms, the official said.
A student at the school told an NBC affiliate in Connecticut: “I was in the gym and I heard like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner and we huddled. We all heard these booming noises, and we started crying. So the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. Then a police officer told us to run outside.”
Meredith Artley, the managing editor of CNN.com, has a friend who works at the school. “She volunteers with the school as well,” Ms. Artley said on CNN.
The woman was in close vicinity to the shooting, which happened in the hallway, according to Ms. Artley. “She described it as a ‘Pop, pop, pop,'” Ms. Artley added. “She said three people went out into the hall and only one person came back, the vice principal, she said, who was shot in the leg or the foot, who came crawling back. She cowered under the table and called 911. She never saw the shooting. There must have been a hundred rounds.”
State police say the Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m., The Associated Press reported. A SWAT team was among the enormous deployment of law enforcement officers who descended on the school. At least one sharpshooter could be seen on the roof of the school.
Danbury Hospital said it was treating three patients from the shooting scene, according to its Facebook page. The hospital, which is not far from the elementary school, said it was on lockdown.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy arrived at the scene of the shooting on Friday afternoon.
The school, located among wooded hills and suburban tracts in Fairfield County, 12 miles east of Danbury, serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The school has about 700 students.
According to a local newspaper, The Newtown Bee, shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, one child was carried from the school by a police officer, apparently seriously wounded, and other children were escorted from the school by the state police. A photograph published by The Bee showed children outside the school visibly upset.
The toll started at 10 and moved up to 20. There's an indication that at least half of those were children. The shooter is said to be dead at the scene, not much more available than that.

Quite sickening to see children being massacred, somehow the more usual type of school shooting on peers seems more "understandable" as stupid as it sounds to write that.
Just yesterday a similar attack happeneed in China with 22 injured by a knife-wielding maniac. They've been pretty frequent in China lately, apparently committed by disgruntled business owners and people who have lost their jobs. So the motives besides mental issues seem to be something of a deep personal failure.
Gun politics will come up, although this happens in China with knives and axes too. And in China you'll get a certain ticket in front of a firing squad and a massive shame for all your relatives and it doesn't seem to stop them from doing it.

The death toll has moved upto 27 with 18 of them children. The shooter is reported to be among those 27.
I have been following the reports on the bbc news channel and it is truely heartbreaking. I can honestly say that while watching this I shed a tear or two.

So it was discovered that he first killed his father at their home and then his mother at the school where she worked as a teacher. That's nothing new, Charles Whitman committed a similar massacre in 1966 after killing his mother. I suppose that's about limited social contacts, when you don't have to worry about your parents you have nothing to lose.
Mix that with with SSRI anti-depressants that can have suicidality as a side-effect.

This just makes me sick to my stomach. I feel so bad for all that parents. I can't imagine the feeling of standing there and waiting to see if your child lived or not.
Did any people hear if the gunman committed suicide or was killed? Last I heard that was unknown.

I agree. High school bullying can be tough, so it is somehow understandable how that could provoke aggression from certain personalities.
But going into an elementary school and massacring little kids - that is messed up.
I'm not sure how traumas effect people at different ages, hopefully the surviving kids are young enough to not completly understand what has been going on.

Given that the elementary school goes up to about age 10, I'd say there's a decent chance that some of them will grow up with some form of post-traumatic stress, or at the very least, bad memories.

The total number right now is 27 - 20 of those are children from the classroom the shooter's mother was the teacher of. In addition, from what I understood, the principal, vice principal, a counselor and a teacher were all shot in the main office during the morning announcements.
Boy, childrens' school attacks sure did go up a lot all of the sudden.
These things are a statistical anomaly. You can't always necessarily predict who's going to do these things just going off the assumption, or even diagnosis, that the guy/girl in question is a psychopath.
Sometimes the people who do it are smart enough to keep it (and their stashes) to themselves until the moment they strike. Others, however, are just angry enough with life and the world to post videos and scary messages for all to see. Hell, the Columbine boys did that, and they weren't stopped until they shot themselves in the head, after the fact. They were even under some amount of police surveillance because people thought they might do something.
