The only reasons I could come up with are mostly of a spiritual or ethical/moral basis mostly invoking ethos rather than any actual logic such as marriage means devotion to a single individual and it is not possible to be devoted to multiple individuals much in the same way that one can't be devoted to multiple contrasting ideologies from the point of spirituality.
Or in the case of ethics, it's done so that a person doesn't have a huge problem out of picking sides or something like that which may cost them or the others involved something very dear or at the very least cause emotional eff ups or some such somewhere along the line.
Then again, this seems a bit too simple. I suppose there could be other actual biological reasons or something that I haven't thought of yet, which is why I want your viewpoints because I really have no idea when comes to biology and I think there's more to it than I have said.
For the most part polygamy is part of misogynistic view, in my opinion. It doesn't need to be, but if it is an expression of man's feeling of superiority over the "weaker" gender then it is wrong.

In the US & Canada those moralistic/religious rejections of polygamy have long been reinforced by stereotypes of polygamists being associated to cults (or rather religious sects perceived as cults by mainstream society, such as the FLDS), as well as well-publicized instances of child and spousal abuse in some polygamist communities.
I don't think polygamy is necessarily wrong, if a man wants to put up with the increased nagging, so be it, but at the same time I think of cases like Warren Jeffs and all the bad shit people do in some of these communities under the guise of polygamy and their freedom of religion.

Perhaps I'm a cultural relativist in this (although in the pessimistic sense). Things that are obvious may not relevant in other places. Don't expect anyone to respect your secular views in x cultures. The definition of marriage between a man and a woman is in our culture.

Can't believe I didn't state this earlier myself, but from what you say I drew the conclusion that even if a man was able to tolerate the nagging, there are very few honest men with the provisions for multiple wives as well as able to live the general populace.
Anyhow, so that's it? No actual logical reason. Nothing like, you know, population or accidental inbreeding problem? No problems within society because resources being wasted to deal with idiots that can't solve their own problems that they created for themselves?
It's not wrong, but ask yourself this, would you really want more than one wife or mother-in-law?

Economies of scale: biggest expense for most people is housing. Shortly followed by energy - of which heating is often a significant chunk. If you can get a group to live together, then your costs go way down.

Gay marriage is still between 2 people. I think it's a bit of stretch to put polygamy in the same realm as gay marriage, and even further to put in it in the realm of animal marriages.
