Because it elicits a sexual reaction from a subconscious primal need to procreate? A primal need that draws us to mature mammaries that will provide adequate milk to our offspring? Just my theory.
And anything sex is inappropriate because with civilization comes the suppression of our basic animal instincts. We are above nature, or so we wish to believe.
Simple. Women cover them up, and like everything, humans want what they can't have. Thus, men want nipples because women say we can't have them.
Ahem, on a serious note. I'm agreeing with what most everybody is saying, and I find S.T.A.L.K.E.R's assesment to be extremely interesting. Perhaps men have something hardwired into us that female breasts and nipples give life, but if that theory was true, why wouldn't women be fascinated with other womens breasts? Afterall, not only males were raised on their mothers milk.
So at first thought it makes sense, but a closer look reveals it makes no real sense at all in my opinion.
But Red Menace brings up a good point, perhaps we are hardwired to be "fascinated" with females breasts/nipples not because we were weaned on them, but because they can provide sustenance for our children in the first stages of their lives.

Who says they arn't?
Or perhaps the fact they have them cancels out that attraction.

Perhaps.
Like it's nothing special to them because they see them all the time? Maybe that's why when girls begin to reach their teens they want nice big breasts, then when they reach teenage years they want to show them off because they finaly got them - and then by aduthood they realize they are just another body part. We're on to something.
In that thread you'll notice my post like right after that picture. 95% of those breasts are visible in that .gif, I find it odd that once the nipple is in view it suddenly becomes a negative image.
By negative, you mean its no longer as interesting right? Rather than oh my god, it's showing a nipple, I must turn away. Just clarifying here.

Possibly, although once you've matured, there are very few people that actually have the desire to do certain things to their mothers, compared with the things they'd like to do to these other women.

Oh, you're more than welcome to run around topless if you so wish it. I serenely doubt anyone here is going to try and stop you. I'm just trying to figure out what the difference is between a topless woman, and a topless man; specifically, they're nipples. And yes, I know that sounds very wrong.

Just because we'd like to go topless, doesn't mean that we want you staring at us.
Think that's answered. Also, I would bet that some women probably wouldn't mind getting them out to show some people, providing the person asking is to their taste. Otherwise, yes, you are that pervert with pepper in your eyes.

You may be right, though this isn't because of our base instincts, but more so our culture. That being the case, why has our culture evolved this way?

To be quite honest I notice eyebrows and shoes before torso, I have no idea where my eyes go to (OOOOH PHO RESTAURANT!!) in between those places.
Eyebrows, to a point I can understand, but shoes? Few people (if any) are going to be wearing shoes all the time.

See, I'm going to have to disagree with this (even though I actually agree with you). I'm disagreeing on a broader spectrum though. What you've just stated is more an opinion than it is truth. It all depends on the person you are. People with good bodies may tell you the complete opposite of what they expect from women, heck, some people use women for their pleasure and then ditch them once bored. It's a nasty little habit. I'd say men should respect women (and vice versa) but that's just an opinion (one I'm sure you'll agree with me on). Your statement came across as though it should be a universal belief.
In addition, as MoreGun has stated, everyone (to some degree) is shallow, regardless of whether they're going to admit it or not. If we weren't a shallow species, we wouldn't judge others at all; at least until we get to know them well ~ but then we don't get to know a lot of people well because we're always judging them. Swings and roundabouts?
I could have read it in the wrong context, if so, I apologise.

For what it's worth (and again, in my opinion) I find this to be true. In my experience (not personally, but from afar) those couples who are the hot couple tend not to stick together for as long as others. One always ends up bored, decides to play away ect. It's usually the couples that don't want for much that stick together.

You're kidding, but it is a truth. You've got to think though, if you were loaded and could afford a newer, younger model (cause lets face it, these girls aren't in it for the love) you might as well make the purchase. You'll get a bit of fun from it, and the girl will get all her accessories bought for her. Plus, if the girl in question is that... way inclined, she's in the perfect place.
Can't take your money with you, might as well spend it on a hot, money-grabbing whore whilst you can, right?

Wouldn't you feel a bit uncomfortable if you were shirtless and I was having a vacant-glare staring match with your nipples? It just seems like a situation to be avoided.

Oh Benedictine. If you're interested in me, all you have to do is say so.
Otherwise, don't try to derail the thread so...noticeably.

I don't think I'm the one who "noticeably" changed the subject from why we should have a particular taboo, but okay.
Hopefully you understood the point anyway, that unwanted sexual attention is unwanted sexual attention, regardless of what you feel owed by complete strangers.

That is an interesting question now. In regards to this, it is further interesting to know that many of the ancient civilizations did not have the women covering their breast. Take as an example to it, the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Africans (where STILL women do not cover the breasts). And more interestingly, the men there did not have glands shoot a burst of manly hormones with the sight of a woman's chest.
It is only in the modern world that males have base instincts awakening with the sight of a woman's chest because that region is now concealed behind the clothing.
Here, for an instant, imagine that you are in the Tibetan region where women cover only one of their breasts. Naturally, for the first few days your hormones would mess you up quite often. The important question is: will it stay like that in the long run or will you start considering the breasts just as another part of a woman's body (beautiful and admirable definitely, but not exactly very desires-arousing)?
