Default American Groups Behind Uganda's "Kill the Gays" Bill

Been reading about this bill being pressed through Uganda’s legislative branches. Though disturbing details, the worst part of it, is that it’s been organized by US based religious representatives.

Some details on it. Though feel free to check Google for your own.

Homosexuality is already legally a crime in Uganda that can lead to lifetime prison sentences, but the new bill would mandate the death penalty for homosexual acts and critics have called it "genocidal" and charged that the bill could require the execution of HIV positive Ugandan citizens. As the College of Prayer website describes, the group is now organizing in Canada's parliament.

Prayer Canada head Rev. David Chotka,

"I have three-twelve members of the Canadian Parliament who have heard about what God is doing in Uganda and would like to attend the Parliamentary COP in Uganda next year. They are interested in bringing the College of Prayer to the Canadian Parliament."

Some details on the crimes this bill would create.

Among the factors which can lead to “aggravated homosexuality” is if one partner is HIV-positive. This bill would mandate HIV testing to determine eligibility for “aggravated homosexuality.”

Also like the earlier draft, the bill includes a complete ban on all LGBT activities — including blogging — which could be construed as “promoting homosexuality.” This infringement on free speech, peaceful assembly, and redress of grievances marks the elimination of fundamental human rights for LGBT Ugandans. The bill also bans all organizations which advocate on behalf of LGBT citizens and holds their leadership criminally liable with fines and imprisonment for up to seven years.

The bill also retains provisions which require that if someone knows that someone is engaging in homosexuality, that person is to report them to the police within twenty-four hours or face fines and/or up to a three year prison sentence themselves. The bill also extends jurisdiction to acts committed outside Uganda by Ugandan citizens. In other words, if a Ugandan citizen is known to be in a gay relationship outside the country, he will risk lifetime imprisonment (or death, if he’s HIV-positive) upon his return. The bill also provides for the extradition of citizens from abroad.
The bill also voids all treaties and international obligations which violate ” the spirit and provisions enshrined in this Act.”

The new bill adds some additional provisions over the previous draft. This bill adds the category of “attempted homosexuality” and provides a penalty of seven years in prison. For “attempted aggravated homosexuality,” the penalty is lifetime imprisonment. It also provides for compensation for “victims” of homosexuality, a provision in law which is sure to result in consensual partners turning against their partner to not only avoid the draconian legal penalties, but to claim the status of victim and seek compensation.

Further, the bill now adds an explicit ban on same-sex marriage. Anyone who enters into a same-sex marriage, either in Uganda or abroad, will liable for a lifetime imprisonment. New charges of “aiding and abetting homosexuality” and “conspiracy to engage in homosexuality” would carry a prison sentence of seven years. There is also a new charge for operating a brothel, with a definition so broad as to include any hotel owner. That, too, carries a prison sentence of seven years.

So it would appear, American Christianity is not as benign as many would like to believe, at least on the world stage. Who knows, perhaps these third world experiments are just preambles? Imagine the the possibilities of such a vague and insane law. This legislation could be used to blackmail or silence government or religious critics on a grand level. Perhaps Gay, is the new "Witch"? Cry witch and burn em at the stake.

These very fundamentalist Christian groups have a hard time gaining lots of traction in the United States, but that doesn't stop them from going to Africa on missionary work (pun was intentional) and spreading their own little ideas about what the Bible is talking about.

You have to understand, a lot of people have to have this notion that they are better than another group of people. Since it can't be black people anymore, or scores of other groups, gays are the next target on their list. In Africa, some of these communities get Christian fundamentalists teaching them about the Bible, God's word, etc. while also helping out those same communities. Over time, they've become followers of the same religious sect, and now the two are sort of joined.

And while these groups might not have mass-support in America, they have enough influence to the point where gay rights are fiercely opposed, and still present a notion that homosexuality is a choice and people can be converted to hetero. Maybe if people got to the point where they realized being gay is not a choice, then people would understand that if there is a God, he created gay people as well, and since we ignore the part in Leviticus about interracial marriage being bad, we can ignore the part in Leviticus about "man laying with another man" or whatever it is.

Besides, it's not like we're contributing to overpopulation, or committing crimes any more than other people, or being a sap on the economy, or any other "problem" everyone faces in their daily lives.

There we go, fixed that for you.

Just so you know, officially the Catholic Church and most mainstream religious branches call for tolerance towards homosexuality. They don't condone it by any means (Though a few Christian churches do allow for gay marriage.) but tolerance is the norm now.

Are you always trying to dis religion?

Obviously it's a fundamental religious branch. There seems to be a lot of them in the news lately... Gay marriage is causing a lot of division in the Church... Not surprising.
