Why wouldn't people be able to point out mistakes?

It's not that someone can't, just usually those that can aren't necessarily involved in the discussion. Some forums are lucky to have certain specialists on an area, but many self-proclaimed specialists really are just as bad for this as well.

Most people are irrelevant to an area under discussion anyway; it doesn't matter what opinion they hold since that opinion makes no practical difference.

That seems rather contrary to the entire point of groupwide discussion.

Also it can be relevant if they are misusing science to propagate misunderstanding and misconceptions to other people, and indeed side-tracking the discussion down false paths.
