In the wide majority of cultures marriage is generally nothing but an economic arrangement, and in fact other relationships tend to be more important. In most matrilineal cultures the woman's brother is the most important person in her life, and is actually the one that raises the children. Marriage is just for economic reasons, and to have kids in the first place.

Just a little aside there. Personally I think marriage should just be a personal choice anyways, not something the government is involved in. If you want to be married to say you are married, or get married in a Church or whatever, and there you go. No economic benefits or anything of the sort. Property is still owned individually unless you say otherwise, so you get what you own if you split, and the children are cared for evenly by the two, or the situations is otherwise settled in court if such if it is more complicated.
