Both the placebo effect and the fact that chicken noodle soup is high in protein, fat, and nutrients that do a body good when you're trying to fight illness.

If you guys want to see overreaction you should see Ukraine. They ended up shutting down the entire country pretty much after an outbreak in their western regions. All schools in the country are closed as are most areas where people gather in large numbers- parks, malls, libraries, etc.

That's still nothing compared to some countries. At least if there was an outbreak shutting down schools and such would make sense. Egypt, on the other hand, slaughtered tens and disposed of tens of thousands of pigs. Of course they didn't seem to realize that accomplished nothing as the "swine" part of swine flu has nothing to do with getting the disease from pigs. That's just where it originally came from in the very first infection of a human.

I find it rather ridiculous that my Algebra teacher gets a flu shot for free because his wife is a pharmacist and I can't get one (even though I'm young and I have a chronic illness) because they're so dang expensive

Egypt hasn't shut down their country though. People are still going to universities, gathering in public areas, and doing the usual things.

In Ukraine, the schools have been shut down for weeks. This has put many children out on the streets doing nothing while their parents are working. Most public facilities are closed as are sporting arenas. People have virtually emptied out pharmacies and stores of medical supplies and masks.

This was a minor outbreak that they applied to the entire country.

Though some people are speculating that it might be a political play by the current Ukrainian Government ahead of the elections to make themsleves look strong and decisive. This can be seen in that they didn't extend the ban to football matches, which would have probably pushed the Ukrainians over the edge.
