Due to the duties excised on cigarettes, smokers pay far more than their fair share in taxes. I personally haven't needed a hospital in quite some time, either.

Ive been saying that for a long time, but then it will extend to alcohol, and then to people who eat unhealthy, and then to people who excercise, etc. If you outcast one group, you will have to outcast them all.

I'm sure Obama makes enough money to afford insurance. He doesn't need socialized health care. Although I can still see how he may have more sympathy for smokers than the majority of us.

Are you sure?? I've spoken to many people from countries with socialized health-care & they all seem to love it. Although, most of them are here now.

And it's well known that the American government doesn't give a rat's ass about the health of individual soldiers in the military. The war in Iraq proves that. They figure that poor healthcare won't do much damage as long as they have the biggest toys & enough man-power to use them.

The military is supposed to be composed of the healthiest people in the country anyway.

Not exactly. Groups that make up the vast majority of the population would never be excluded; such as unhealthy eaters & unsafe drivers.

I also think it would be unlikely that people would be excluded for things that are generally portrayed by everyone as healthy; like exercising. It's possible to be running & trip & break your ankle. I don't think anyone will say you should be excluded from public health-care for choosing an unhealthy life-style in such a case.

I pay my taxes for get the healthcare I need when needed. I also pay the hefty taxes on the cigarettes I purchase regularly. Interestingly enough, the province of Ontario (in Canada for the geographically-impaired folk), is plannign to sue the big tobacco companies (provided B.C.'s own suit goes through) to the sum of $50 billion to recoup the costs in providing healthcare for tobacco-related illnesses for the last half-century.

Obviously you aren't paying enough if the province needs to sue to recoup loses.

I have no problem with people putting whatever they want in their bodies, but it's not my job to keep you healthy if you choose to partake in a substance that is proven to be unhealthy. For related problems at any rate. Smoker's lungs can be damned, and drinker's livers can be damned for all I care.

Dont get me wrong, it has its perks. And after you wait for 8 hours to be seen initally for your vitals, you are halfway done with your visit.

But the healthcare we have in the military is a sneak peek of what is to come for the general population.

So the job of the corpsman is easy. A corpsman is nothing but a 19 year old kid who graduated field medical school. He only has to deal with a specific number of conditions, because all potential military recruits are screened medically and rejected if there is a problem. So those in the military can only have x number of problems, and by extension, the corpsman only has to have knowledge of a limited number of problems.

I already wait 8 hours to be seen for a stomech virus. And then am told I have to have symptoms for 2 weeks before they will help me. You civilians have a wider range of health problems. Your situations will be alot worse. Longer wait times. Your body will get rid of, or succumb to the problem before a doctor can diagnose it.

I think smokers and addicted alcoholics should be disqualified, or anybody convicted for a drug offense.
