What do you guys think about spirituality as opposed to religiousness? For example, I have a friend who considers herself a religious person, despite the fact that she does not follow the christian or any other doctrine. She believes there is something out there, it's watching over her, and it helps her get through the day knowing it.
I have rather mixed feelings about this kind of thing. On one hand, I respect the fact that she acknowledges the nature of the church, and that she does not associate with it for any other reason than tradition. (She lives in Poland, where 99.8% of the population is Catholic.) She celebrates Christmas and Easter, as well as occasionally going to mass on Saturdayss. She says mass puts her in a calm, relaxed, clear state of mind.
On the other hand, I don't like the idea that she would need something like this to make her feel secure. One day when we were talking, she said that she was impressed with my bravery as a nonbeliever, the thought of death being the finality of her existence is too discomforting. |
