Default The Olympic Games are a waste of money?

My friend's brother's team had a debate with another team about this moot, they were affirmative. I don't know who won, this was during lunch and I had to go to biology. But how much do you agree with the statement? And why?

I don't think the games themselves are a waste of money, but the whole production is. Just the same as pretty much any commercial sport, they're all colossal wastes of time and money - but they keep the rabble happy, am I right? They are also a great source of jingoistic nationalism.

I think the Olympics are not a waste of money.

Yes I think it has become a big commercialization but the spirit and idea behind the games still live.

I think its great that athletes from around the world and compete in the spirit of sportsmanship. Of course many nations use the games as a platform to show they are superior and the best.

I wish it would go back to amateur athletes only.

One of the points that the team made was that sponsorship and corporate funding were good, because that was pumping money into the economy from overseas, but spending excessive amounts by the government was not the thing to do - they proposed a cap of 0.3% of GDP to be spent on the Games, not counting infrastructure benefiting the general populace like transport, internet, and other facilities like hospitals and stuff. According to them, this would mean that the poor would be the ones to benefit from the Games through the infrastructure and money saved, not the rich.

Agreed. But then nations like China who don't officially pay their athletes will have a huge advantage. But if it is professional athletes too, then the amateurs are usually at some form of disadvantage...

The Olympics symbolizes peace, yes peace. The story goes that Greece and Rome were at war with each other, the war was lasting longer that usual for they where both dominant powers.(Soviet Union, America, Great Britain.) The story then starts...
Tis' not that long
Anyway it is said that there were two old men who were playing chess, one had an idea, to have seven day of peace in which both nations would send their best athletes to a colluseum to compete with each other. The idea was taken up, and that's how the Olympics started.

Anyway the Olympics symbolize peace for many a person.

There are still enough characters like Eric the Eel (see BBC SPORT | SWIMMING | African novice makes big splash), who had never even seen a 50m pool before coming to the Olympics, and examples of true humanity in the Olympics that shine through.

But the commercialisation is unfortunate.

My favorite is still the Jamaican bobsled team. True amateurs who were able to make it to the Olympics and compete. Sure they didn't do well but the point was they got their chance. The rules were changed after that so nothing like that could happen again which I think is wrong. Any nation should be allowed to compete if they meet the requirements. Changing the rules to keep people you dont want competing out is crap and goes against the spirit of the games.

And I agree that the games represent peace. Instead of competing under a flag of battle its much better to compete under a flag of athletic competition.

No, I don't, because I don't think that it's true. Rome was forbidden to take part in the Olympics for hundreds of years. But it is true that the Olympics were still held regardless of whether there was a war on; the peace just didn't extend to the nations themselves, only the athletes.

I wasn't proposing to ban the Olympics entirely, just add a cap to the amount of money nations can spend, based on GDP - this would effectively stop the Olympic Games budget pretty much doubling each successive four years, as it is doing now.

Now that I look into it you're correct, that's not how most people think it started. But a few still do. Anyway...
"First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. "
*(^This was taken off of here.)*

"Then again it's still just legend and myth...
The ancient Olympic Games are so old that even the ancient Greeks didn't know how they started. The origins of the ancient Games are steeped in legend and myth. Different versions of the origins of the Games were described by ancient writers such as Pindar, Strabo, Phlegon, Pausanius and Eusebius. "

NOTE: Although this is a website from the government of Greece even they have wrong information -- and they wrote -- incorrectly -- that the Olympic Games started in 776 BCE. This is a very common error of historical fact -- the ancient Games started earlier than this date, but the first recorded victor in the Games was in 776 BCE. There were earlier, unknown victors.
