Bush apparently awarded several American Medal's Of Freedom today.

This is the highest award a civilian can get in the US. I think it would be comparable to a citizen of the UK being Knighted.

Some of these I can understand and agree with

Harper Lee. The author of the beloved novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" was honored for her contribution to American literature.

Oscar Elias Biscet. A human rights advocate and champion of freedoms in Cuba, Biscet is a political prisoner in Cuba who is being recognized for his fight against tyranny and oppression.

Henry Hyde. The Illinois Republican served for 32 years in the House, where he was known for his battles against abortion rights and his leading role in the impeachment of President Clinton. He was honored as a "powerful defender of life" and an advocate for strong national defense, the White House says.

A very distinguished medal was awarded to a fellow Republican who was IMHO doing nothing more than his job?

And this is considered worthy of such a honor?

The Medal of Freedom was established by President Truman in 1945 to recognize civilians for their efforts during World War II. The award was reinstated by President Kennedy in 1963 to honor distinguished service. It is given to those deemed to have made remarkable contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, culture, or other private or public endeavors.

The term freedom has become a propaganda term. Today it is exchangeable with American interest, it has lost it's real meaning.

Apart from that, Mr. Hyde here protects freedom by battling abortion rights?

As preposterous as it sounds, it is something we shouldn't be concerned about. What WhiteShark just commented is something that should be taken seriously, I do not like using the positive aspects of life into propaganda against our enemies.

Its something that annoys me. The UK has the same thing with our lower end honors, such as the MBE's. They are seemingly given away to whoever thinks they are important.

They SHOULD be kept for people that actually do something other than their job.

Fortunately its only our lowest honors that get this. From what you have said the George Cross is the equivalent award in the UK and they have given out ~150 in 100 years. They aren't quite as easy to get.

Well...

He wasn't in an airport bathroom having sex, or molesting paiges. I'd say that's worth an award.

I'm not singling out Republicans. There are plenty of jackass Democrats too, probably more.
