You know the type: Those inbred hicks who drive around in rusted pickups spewing racial slurs, scratching their ass a lot, brewing potent moonshine, and hating anyone and anything not like them.

I suppose the only thing missing would be the confederate flag.

I dont think Europeans would admit that there are redneck types amongst their ranks, though I'm sure they do indeed exist. A Euro whose fanatical obsession with NASCAR (woo they're going left!) or blatant lack of civilized nature must exist. There are some in Canada, so I assume there must be at least a few in Europe, one never knows.

As a society we Brits quite honestly couldn't give a fuck about NASCAR. But don't worry, we have other problems. From what I know about Rednecks, they hardly seem the type that is likely to emigrate; which is pretty much going to restrict the Redneck lineage to America.

Not sure if that was directed at me, but if so I think you may have misinterpreted my statement. I meant it would be missing as in that particular flag would be meaningless anywhere outside the United States, and it's downright offensive here. I'm not sure why there are so many people who cling to that treasonous symbol and the racism inherent in displaying it, and anyone claiming it's just a figure of "southern pride" is full of shit. Bottom line...I find it just as irritating as you do.
I don't "secretly hate America" and I'm insulted by any such accusation. There's no secret or hidden meaning behind the topic question, and that's all there is to it.

Actually yes we do have rednecks, except we don't call them that here. What you described normally inhabits areas of Cornwall known as Redruth and Camborne. Inbreeding isn't as, lets say, uncommon as it is else where in the country and for the most part the people there are just plain idiots.

Of course the area isn't as bad as it used to be, but I still wouldn't live there even if my life depended on it.

I don't think we have rednecks here, sure we make fun of the people living far on the countryside, and they do have some odd habits like the youth gathering for tractor racing in their town centres, but I can't remember anything quite on the level of a real redneck.
Pretty much no Finns care much about NASCAR, but many do about F1 and rally, unfortunately that isn't particular to any group, but rather a somewhat nationwide problem.

We dont have redneks, no. But america doesnt have Chavs. Which is "worse" is questionable, but It would be very hard for me to stay unbiased and analytical as last weekend a chav nicked my shoe. Walking home drunk in London with 1 shoe at 2.45am is not fun.

I was under the impression that a redneck would seclude themselves as much as possible(from other societies, hence the "limited" gene pool)? If thats the case, then Chav's are worse, as they (all, every, ever, categorically :p) steal your shoes. A redneck who leaves my shoes alone is better than a shoe stealing chav.

Not really, I think having a vast, open countryside is kind of a prerequisite for the breeding of rednecks. I live in a very small country and somehow it doesn't work here.
That doesn't mean however that there aren't any demographic groups that really get on my nerves most of the time.

Well, I think rednecks in europe don't have to be beer guzzling, racist, government supporters. Just people who live in the middle of nowhere with weird customs and ways of life then the rest of the country, like Russia in the east I'm sure is full of what could be called rednecks. I know in north canada, they have peopl that are almost identical to rednecks. NASCAR doesn't apply to european rednecks because it's an american "sport". But there could be similar redneck type events that some european populus love and others laugh at them for it. My thoughts are, I'm pretty sure there are rednecks in parts of Europe. Like the people ho live in Northeast spean, in the mountains, they are somewhat like rednecks.

No Rednecks (not that many pickupts and SUV's either but sadly the number of SUV's is increasing). But every country has it's "scum" as in a stereotype for a group of people who generally is labeled as being dumb/retarded, selfish (asocials as in not-social we call them here), "we solve problems with our fists, "I'm always right *punch*, "law?", racist people out there who listen to rather bad music.

Luckly we don't have a lot around in my area but you can find them in all major cities (the bad/poor/neglected neighbourhoods).

But american rednecks (retarded, selfish, gun crazy, nationalist, extremely conservative, ... )? No.

Oh and no clue what NASCAR is untill I googled it. :p

Not really, The Netherlands is quite developed all around, cities don't agree with what would qualify as "redneck" behaviour i dont think.

We do however have "sjonnies", people who favor training gear as casual wear, make a mess of their lawn, have a legion of kids strung up in handmedowns which are generally too small, living off wellfare..

We do, somehow, in Italy. We have them. They are racist and think that anything different from the true citizens of northern italy is bad. They are called "leghisti" and they were born thanks to a political party (Lega Nord)... but all they do is whine about the immigrants and the people from southern italy...

I believe they are present in every country, however they're different from each culture. In the US we have the so-called "rednecks", in the UK we have the Welsh -- or, maybe they don't fall under the same "category" as I know very little of how it's like abroad, really. But I do still believe that there are "rednecks", or rather, certain minorities who are viewed in the same light as many Americans view "rednecks".

We call them 'Tykes' or 'Bloody Yorkshire Farmers'. There Confederate Flag is the White Rose, though they don't use it so much, they still foolishly think that it is better than the Red Rose.

Oh..at the age of 12 I knew exactly what the Confederate Battle Flag was all about. It is others like yourself that associate that flag with slavery and biggotry. You see the flag really is a symbol of our heritage in the South. Too many people think that our Civil War was about slavery. The war was about our independence from the North. It is like saying that the 4th of July is a racist holiday because guess what....back then ...all 13 colonies had slaves. You see...it doesn't make sense. General Grant had slaves and so did President Lincoln's in-laws. Many don't even know that congress was willing to pass a certain amendment to allow permanint slaverly if only the South returned to the Union. There is so much that people don't really know about the South.

Perhaps it's because that flag is associated with slavery and biggotry, just as the swastika is associated with Nazism, no matter what else it might represent.
But that particular heritage has some pretty ugly parts; parts that aren't just confined to the dark corners of history. Hell, the flag is even used today by people with an utterly inhuman view on certain issues.

Well not really rednecks. But as Master of puppets said, in the north part of Sweden there are some sort of "rednecks" they drive in old cars around the town square, screaming racial things, drinks beer and makes fun of the police.

When I grew up though (the 90's), the main problem was big well trained steroid pittbull-kinda like dudes. Who were 190-200 cm tall and wear Schott jackets (the Schoot jackets were their trademark so to speak). Those dudes were dangerous and those were the fellows you had to watch out for if you came to a small town. They were in the big cities aswell, and I would actually like to say that there were many more of them in the big cities. But those who existed on the country side were much more un-predictable.
I never had any problems with those kind of dudes since I knew many of them in my home city, but you could never know what those on the country side would do when they saw you.
And not that they were openly racists, but the racist-opinions were there. And immigrants weren't very liked, and also a hot target for those kind of guys.

These guys are still around in Sweden, but IMO you don't see them as much now days though as you used to. They still exist in quite large numbers here in Denmark though:)

That said, so long as there are two groups of people in the world, one is generally going to be 'redneck.' By that I mean working-class, low wage, bad lawn kind of person. And the two groups will ALWAYS make fun of each other.

Every society has them, they'll just call them hillbillies, chavs, sjonnies, et cetera. And can someone please tell me what 'Chavs' is derived from?

The idea isnt to question whether or not Europe has American style rednecks but whether they have European style white trash. In america, white trash aka rednecks are characterised by loving loud obnoxious sports (nascar) swilling cheap beer, being ill educated, uncouth and bigoted hateful people stuck in the past (typically favoring a losing army). The European equivalent would also be a poorly educated welfare sucking slob with a fascination with sports (soccer hooligans) swilling cheap or warm beer and being hateful bigoted turds (neo nazis...) Im from what ive seen Europe has their fair share of white trash.

Oh and Jill, i love ya girl but come on. Even i, a true bred southern knows that Slavery was and will always have been the critical lynch pin in the Civil War. The claim about "States Rights" leaves out the part where the particular right in question was the right to own slaves and to expand that issue into new states. The initial proclamation for secession spelled out the issue of slavery being a key factor in any event. trying to gloss that over is historically dishonest. That the South ever thought it was a good idea to invade the North following its victories in Virginia is insane. had they held root, the war would have ended as it was terribly unpopular to the North at that time and they had no serious qualm against the South.

Well, Not many people in the South think very highly of Sherman. His march to the sea destroyed many peoples homes and property. Some Yankee people thing he was some sort of a hero that was talented and a successful General. Sherman was actually very brutal and cruel. Many civilains where raped, murdered and died due to starvation. He basically targeted civilians. You should read up more on your hero. BTW...have you ever noticed how crazy that guy looks in all of his photos? The man was evil.
Well...it all happened before we where born. At least we are one nation again and let's hope we learned something from the Civil war.

I was born in the south, my ancestry wore confederate grey. Even my native ancestors fought for the confederacy, although after the battle of pea ridge, it was decided that the Cherokee were too damn mean. That said, the US would not have survived as 2 nations. Great Britain was on the verge of recognizing the confederacy and if that had happened the south would've probably become a british colony and that would've caused another war. I live in the middle of hillbilly hell, most of the people here hate me and I hate them and I wouldn't have it any other way. When a black man that served his country and saved my ass more than once gets ridiculed by some inbred trash, because he had the nerve to come visit me; I just want them dead; just like the confederacy that they love so much.

As far as flying the stars and bars; well, it's a free country. Know this though, that was the battle flag and it was legitimately defeated and honorably surrended. Here is a pic of the flag of the confederacy and it's right where it belongs; flying over dead men.


Even the south isn't the old south anymore, it's now just a myth of an old ugly fact.

Sherman's march destroyed PROPERTY, not human lives. Very few civilians were targeted, far less (if any) were raped. Atlanta was, in reality, only about 30% destroyed, catastrophic damage to be sure, but hardly burned to the ground.

His troops conducted what is known as 'foraging,' a COMPLETELY LEGAL practice in which an army takes necessary supplies by nonlethal force, namely livestock and foodstuffs. However, his men were renown for their unwavering and borderline fanatical devotion to the Union cause and often took such 'necessities' as silver and pretty much anything else of value. However, very rarely were civilians killed, and those that were generally tried to fight the foragers.

To make a long discussion short, if Sherman was so bad, why did his principle opponent, General Joseph E. Johnston, weep at his funeral, saying that the world had lost a great man? If you want to discuss further, I'd be happy to under an independent topic of via PM.


Back to the topic at hand, I think it's interesting to note how similar people act all over the world, especially considering the jingoism that permeates many societies.

Sure they have rednecks in Europe. In the 1930s and 1940s they called them the Nazis. Nowadays, you have all the various Neo-Nazi groups. We are not immune to it on our shores either: the Klan, the American Nazi party, the Minutemen.

Just driving a beat-up pickup or waving the confederate flag does not make you a redneck. "Redneck" is a state of mind: rabid racist, xenophobe, ultra-conservative. Just like European skinheads would ike to see gypsies hung or put in concentration camps, we have our nutcases who would like to see gays executed, Mexicans executed or put behind barbed wire etc. The Nazis took it one step further, in that they actually exterminated millions of people in Dachau, Auschwitz and other places, but rednecks, Nazis, Minutemen, skinheads etc all follow the same path.
