yup just as the chinese persicuted democratic visionaries, and the soviet union killed democratic visionaries. this was during the cold war, it was stict, democracy vs. communism. in the end democracy won and communism fell. communism is not a good thing, my parents escaped from communist czechoslovakia. it held back the advancement of nations for 50 years.
china is not a true communist state, it is pretty capitalist. thats why all cheap stuff is made in china.

why do westerners think so highly of themselves, when the western world has thugs walking streets, too much sordid sex, single mothers, homosexuals, people who value material things over life.
China's better at some of these things (less of a divorce rate, I hear), equally bad at other, and worse at yet other. It's funny to hear you complain about the US's bums when Red China's such a nation of poverty.

Actually, it matters to the extreme whether or not you're a billionaire or a bum living on the street. If I slap a low-class Hispanic kid living in the slums, nothing's going to happen to me, whereas if I slap a rich, spoiled ole white kid with a lawyer papa, I'm liable to get sued for "malicious assault".
Not to mention, of course, that if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time, you risk getting sent off to Guantánamo and tortured (Tipton Three) - with the torturers getting the active support of the neo-conservative voters.

First of all, far from all people in China are "happy" and "proud to be loyal workers". Second off, dissent is a cornerstone of democracy.
How many people die in your coal mines each year? 3000? Do you think those workers in their dark, safety-devoid mines are "happy to be loyal workers"? "Upholding the law" isn't always justifiable. The Nazi party were "just upholding the law" when they executed Sophie Scholl for spreading propaganda leaflets. The US authorities were "just upholding the law" when they arrested Rosa Park for refusing to get off her bus.
"Upholding the law" and "committing acts violating basic humans rights" are not always mutually exclusive.

As far as I'm concerned, a government with happy citizens is much much better than any with a place on the top 5 exports, or the greatest military.
