Fair enough, but that's not a right...it's a philosophical principle, and in my personal opinion, a naive one. You've given examples of "necessary evils" - if they are necessary it means that this principle doesn't work out in real life. You consider the risk that children get their hands on drugs to be too high. The British government considers the risk that school shootings and things like the Hungerford Massacre occur to be too high.

Speaking of naivity, its a little naive to give these people this power, and be surprised when they abuse it at your expense.

Don't worry, power abuse would never surprise me. But then, since any kind of power can be abused I don't see what point you're trying to make. Of course if you could name a specific "abuse" and explain to me why it classes as abuse at all, that would help.

I also think you'd have a hard time finding a government that doesn't already have the power to ban/regulate things it decides are dangerous or exert a harmful influence on society, so I'm not sure who you're calling naive now...
