I'm not going to lie and pretend I care more than enough to think "wow, that sucks" in regards to less developed countries. I know I should, technically, but I really care alot more about myself and the people around me. If I lived in those regions, I'd be singing a different tune. But luckily, I don't.

And all those other things you mentioned: large, possibly very dangerous nuisances? Yes. Threat to the human race? No. We'll deal with it, like we always have to.

Wouldn't it be far wiser and cheaper to combat against global warming now than wait the disaster to happen?

stopping of the Gulf stream? WTH are you talking about? We would need the OPPOSITE of global warming to do that. Ocean current is a factor of frictional forces of wind over water combined with differential heating of the planets surface. The rotation of the planet determines both so there will ALWAYS be a synoptically westerly flow over the region. The combination of the Sub tropical jet in summer and extension of the polar front jet in winter arent going to magically change.

Actually it would be cheaper to simply adapt your local area of living (infrastructe etc) to any possible changes than to spend money hoping that your insignificant local changes in behaviour could ever hope to possibly influence weather effects. Its like knowing you live in a flood zone. Do you
A- build huge ass levies, drain the surrounding area and seed incoming clouds to lower moisture count in you area, or do you B move someplace that isnt 30ft below sea level and right next to the coast? Nature will ALWAYS win.

I think its too late, unfortunately.

With some luck, our parents and grand parents, not us, will be the ones remembered in history for being a completely irresponsable and shortsighted generation.

Increasing temperatures could melt Arctic ice and subsequently release huge amounts of fresh water in the ocean. This would reduce the saltiness of the water, meaning it becomes less dense, and so it sinks slower, this in turn means the Gulf Stream may slow, or in worse case scenario, stop. I don't wish to be dragged into another huge debate about global warming but there is evidence to suggest that global warming could slow, or posssibly stop, the Gulf Stream.

Nope, the reduction in salinity, in a world wide basis would be insignificant for it to cause major salination deviations in any one expanse of water, especially a circuitious current one. The issue remains in that the Gulf itself is a shallow body of water whose temp is derived in great part due to surface temps. If we are in agreement that temps are increasing due to global warming then it stands to reason that those surface temps will also play an effect on actually speeding up the Gulf stream (hence creating MORE hurricanes of increased strength.) It sounds like someone is cherry picking there information to achieve a pre-determined result. Im not accusing you Irish by any means but this is one of those things that irks me on a professional level is watching a bunch of scientist play data bingo.

And i agree, we've had way too many debates on GW as it is in this room.

I don't think it is caused by man for 2 reasons:
1. In the 70's everyone was saying it was Global Cooling. People ignored it and so the Earth Crunchies went for Global Warming.
2. While I am not for pollution and think we can do a better job I also think that this emphasis that man is the cause of it is bogus. Volcanoes do far more damage in such a short time they are active. I read some where one of the volcanoes in Hawaii was on a daily basis producing the equilvalent of 3500 factories in pollution.

I think it is great people are taking notice of their surroundings and trying to clean up our environment. Yet, I am a not a believer that man is causing global warming.

You misunderstand me. Global warming, yeah, we'll get hotter summers and colder winters, maybe lose a bit of coastline. But in the next 65 years I guarantee that there will be no drastic changes to life caused by changing climate.
