Ever think how lucky you are?
 

I was thinking about how there are billions of people on earth. how the hell did i end up so well off. I mean if you are reading this you are most likly a lot luckyer than you think. i mean look at all of africa or china or other third world or underdeveloped countrys. i mean i live here in so. cal. and have a great time with life and eating as much food as i want, while other kids are dieing of starvation in africa. while others are trying to survive by fishing and farming while im playing BF2 and have a nice cold soda next to me. or even people who are born with disabilitys and are limited the rest of their life while i have no defects and am perfectly health. but i guess this is how the world goes, i guess im just lucky.
what do you guys think about this subject?

No, what I mean is : I heard that sentence : I had the mischance to actually having been born 40 kilometers souther than Gibraltar. Someone up there can live a decent life without missing anything, while here, its hell.

Im not born in Morroco, Im a quebecquer made of MicMac and French blood.

Yea we are a lot more lucky than people who have to survive each day in a 3rd world country. I feel kind of sorry for them, but then I realize that God put us here for a reason.

Of course I think about it. Seriously, once I was watching some video, I think it was Iraq, and the first thing I thought was "Holy Shit, I'm glad I don't have to live in Baghdad, living in a crumbling Neighborhood, with the constant threat of insurgent bombs around me." I'm glad I don't live in Iraq, or any other country like that . .

I usually don't think about 3rd would countries though. My grandparents may be insane, but they weren't insane enough to move from Italy to Ethiopia.

I think about this more: The path I'm on. One single though could have changed me to a God-Fearing Evangelist, instead of a Satan-obssessed . . something.

I consider myself lucky. I also consider the fact that if everyone else was too, it wouldn’t be called lucky. It would be something else entirely.

Better 'you' then I, right. Many people have it, few admit to it.
You can never appreciate anything with out the ying yang effect of it all.

I think more important than just realizing you're lucky, is giving something to those who aren't. If you believe in God, maybe that's why he put you here.

I am a very lucky person, and i forget about that sometimes, and it's a pity that i do, i mean, i could be over in Iraq, or poor, or in some 3rd world country, it puts things in perspective.

I Thank God every night before I go to bed, thanking him for giving me the life that is before me, giving me a loving caring family and allwoing me to have all there is to offer in life. I am so thankfull, I somtimes think what my life could of been like if I were born into a diffrent family or diffrent country. I am so thankfull that God chose to put me where I am and to have given me all the opertunitys life can offer.

I donate 15% of my income. It means I miss out on at least one meal a week. It's only a token gesture, I know.

I'm always sure that our world can do better for its people. We just have to help it along the way.

Well, I must admit that I do not really often really think about this subject, as I've got some (compared to real problems, little) problems on my own. But those are negligible to 'real' problems.

So therefore I thank you for reminding me. Because, yes, I do know I'm very lucky the position that I'm in. Extremely lucky, actually.

And, it's also good to think about all the things you take for granted. Flowing water out of the tap, playing games, having fun with friends (who probably are also healthy, and have good lifes).

The world is a very bad place for most people, if all wealth was distrabuted evenly than than each person would get 9,300 dollors a year. Our history teacher told us a very sad truth, if we aren't off expoliting some poor 3rd world nation than our quality of life goes down. Either way you cut it the world is a very poor place still. We have much wealth but no morals. Other nations have no wealth and no morals.

I think i'm pretty lucky that I am very smart and was born only with allegies and athletic asthama. If I was born anywhere but a modern nation i'd be dead by now because I wouldn't be able to be drafted to fight in some war over a cow or something.

I just wish that their was someway we could share the world's wealth in a fair way so that poor countrys can catch up. Could you even imagine actually dieing from the flu like so many people do in 3rd world nations do everyday? Here they give you a shot and your fine. But they can't even afford a 20 dollor shot!

Never goes a day without me thinking about that at least once. I feel so sorry for people who have it much more bad than I do, I just wish that I could do something to help them.

I'll try and help those who are less fortunate then me, but I'm not going to feel guilty because I was born in a different place and ended up better off.

well yes I am lucky when I compare myself to people who live in slums.
but I am the unluckiest person in these forums.wanted to join the military and people started making fun of me.some Bangladeshis are really heartless.I no longer have any friends.People don't share their secrets with me any longer.
I am an outcast.I wish I was a street child or something.It would have been better for me.

I don't really consider myself lucky in that respect because, if i had been born somewhere else, i would have had different parents, family, friends, i would have been a different person. So i couldn't really say "I" had been born somewhere else. It wouldn't be "me" then.

Well with hindsight I'm exceedingly grateful to whatever it is that put me where I am today. My life is far from perfect, but I know I have it comparitively easy.

I'm also glad to have been born in this particular period in time.

I'm glad to have been born in this generation and where I am now. Sometimes I'm quite glad that I've got Autism, it makes me diferent from 'normal' people. Nothing more boring than being normal, really.

most of them work as labour in supermarts or convenience stores , some of then get as low as 600 rupees per month, i.e 15$ approx

Damn, thats a mighty tiny wage for a month. I spend that on soda's and munchies a couple times a week. Typical people in wealthier countries should have no use for self pity considering the what if's.

thats why child labour is high in poor families , they can survive only if everyone in the family works.you can live for 2 months if you spend 500$ carefully, they tend to charge more to foreigners

This is why it bugs me when you get all these kids, born into rich families, who cut themselves and stuff and become all suicidal. There is always a person worse off than them and they dont consider suicide or hurt themselves, they just get on with it and deal with the cards they have been dealt with.

I was watching Platoon the other night, and that made me feel really appreciative for the life I have been given, I am very lucky, I could easily have been born into a poor Vietnamese family or be born somewhere else that isn't as privileged as England and other MEDC's.

autism can make you actully smarter than 'normal' people from what ive heard. this is another reason i consider myself lucky though. i have no mental disorders not ever ADHD or ADD. which a lot of kids now have.

you pretty lucky if you are on a computor right now, also educated because you speak english while a lot of bangladeshis are illiterite. social life is not about being lucky, its about changing to better fit your social life.

I wouldnt trade my life for anyones. I get to visit weird and interesting places people and cultures. Jump out of aircraft with a reasonable degree of safety. Tell officers what i want them to do and fire shiat loads of ammunition that i dont have to pay for from weapons that i dont have to perform maintaince on. I wear a spiffy uniform. Get paid a pretty comfortable wage. Drive a nice car and have free health and dental. Sex life is active and i get PAID to get educated. How sweet is that?!

So true, how many people live in town with cultural treasures but that has never seen any of them, because, heh, they go to work everyday in front of it and well, it melts in the rest of the scene.

I think about it every now and then, especially when seeing people who have it a lot worse, but sometimes I unfortunately forget about it and get picky about food and stuff.
Cheer up, inspired by this thread I just wrote a long list of why I'm lucky and why not, and although they were about equally long the good things were more important than the bad, perhaps you could try it too? :)
Hm, I should really visit the local cathedral from the late 1200s some day, never been there yet although I have lectures about one hundred meters away four days every week. :p

I think the whole issue on "lucky" and what constitutes it are subjective to the persons experience, and perception. When you have a suburbanite teenager in California slashing their wrists, or kids crying “oh me” anywhere else its fair to guess to them, it’s the worst ‘they’ can imagine. Many, many people have no basis for comparison to what really hard luck can be, or what unlucky truly is. A lot of people take every little thing for granted, and with a mind set that “anyone who matters, has this too”. This is a world where empathy is not a prerequisite for existence.

To an extent, emotional pain is all relative. While the starving may live in constant physical and emotional pain (or they may not), an adult's tax problem can seem just as severe as a possible monster under the bed to a child.

Shouldn't you try to improve what you feel needs improving, if you can? How is trying to change laws/policies on an issue taking something for granted?

Things are good, great, but why not still trying to progress.

I'd compare it to not conducting medical research, because things are better than they've ever been in that field.
