Also, I merely used the quote to illustrate my point. I've heard several Americans use it on this forum, so I thought I'd make it easier to understand, since my post was directed towards Americans.

I'm not arguing against tyranny being possible in the US, it is (during the great depression, Huey Long was practically the Dictator of Louisiana), I'm arguing against the idea of Tyranny happening now under Bush. I'm also arguing that "constant vigilance" on the part of opposition parties is impractical and a plague on our system.

By constant vigilance, Jefferson could have also been referring to vigilance against other countries. During his presidency the impressment issue, which would lead to war under Monroe, came up. The antifederalist practices of Jefferson also were impractical. Not only was he unable to abide by them under both terms, but his successor, Antifederalist James Monroe stepped outside of the box on several occasions too. Living purely by his teachings just isn’t possible for an effective president.

Don't you guys find it funny that the U.S. is pretty much the only country in the world that can build up its military power without a big fuss? And that if anyone else increases even their defenses a bit, everyone knows about it because the U.S. has everyone on surveilance.

Oh yeah, it's hilarious.

I hope China continues to arm itself--there needs to be some balance of terror. When the "good guys" have all the bombs, they cease being the "good guys."

When the USSR was a big threat, the US government wouldn't have dared to try getting away with what they're doing in the world today. (In the very least, they would have had to ask the Soviets if it was okay.)

yeah. thats like Israel crying about why Egypt has a strong military  and saying that there isnt a military threat in the region. while in turn Israel gets as much weapons as it wants and as good as it wants..

not fair in both cases. even if it was replacing egypt with israel in that scenario still wouldnt be fair.

One thing one of my teachers used to say about China it that it was thought of as the sleeping giant, compared to the US, we are always into some shit somewhere. Iam not saying they just sit there not doing a thing.. What Iam trying to say is that they got just about all the weapons we have. But if you think about it.. If it came to a fight and the giant was suddenly awaken or just decided to jump on someone.. There would or could be no winner.. Face it folks.. Even if we was to launch first, it wouldnt be to long before someone else was to launch then another and so on.. How could anyone win that.. But Iam not to sure China is the main thing to worry about here.. Its gonna be one of them other little countrys.. Again, there can be no winner in a nuke exchange these days....

That's called the MAD situation, by the way. Mutually Assured Distruction. Countries were so paranoid that their opponents had nuclear arms, that all of a sudden many countries had them - and it's basicaly a situation of - you nuke us, we nuke you before it gets here, that way - we're all screwed.

It's what stops countries from using nukes, basicaly. Kinda scary thought, but that was (is?) the situation...:uhm:
