When you are really using your computer alot after about a month or 2 windows is just so unstable that it becomes ridculous.
For Instance right now I am running Music/ Downloads/ Opera(Internet browser)/ and Trillian (Instant Messager) and thats enough for Windows to start closing programs because it can't keep track of it all.

Windows is great for the Internet User and for some Business people, but if you are a serious gamer, or someone that just likes to spend 3+ hours a day on the computer you will notice unstability fast.

Running Ships off of this is just retarded because you are going to have to have the computer running all the time and that really gets Windows confused. I would say 20% of the times I leave my computer running over night I find in the morning it freezes 20 minutes after I leave it.

Well, I use XP, and it never fails unless I screw up really bad. As the Navy is composed of people trained at taxpayer expense not to screw up really bad, I don't see too much harm.

Windows is OK for most purposes, but I wouldn't want to risk my life on it. I work with twelve year old SVR4 unix mainframes, they are never rebooted, because they never crash. Windows servers on the other hand... I'd give them a couple of months at the most, before something or other screws up.

My winXp on my laptop never freezes. I think the computers that freeze are mostly underpowered 10 year old computers... like my schools computers. But then again,... I have an old IBM that I use sometimes.. and it uses win98 and it works perfectly....

Hmm, if it's anything like last time most of the critical systems will have people from software development companies down to write the programs and the windows system will just do the background work (file handling etc).
Still windows does like to force everything to go through it to get to the hardware
The question is would you trust your life to a program that has gaping holes in the security and proven stability issues? I know I wouldn’t.

The Canadian Gov't uses a specialized OS in a lot of their newer naval hardware (for Running weapons, etc) including the Halifax class cruiser...but they still use some windows based servers for more domestic things....i'll try and find a link to more info on it.....

Here's some more info. It's a whole system, not just an OS.

well i dont know why your comp plays up so much i've been running mine for 9 months now,i've uninstalled and reinstalled programs and even had viruses,trojans,spyware on it but it still runs fine. the only problem i had was a hardware fault

going back to the topic i actually work in the naval dockyard in plymouth,i deal with naval personnel every day (im civilian myself) and its seems they have their braincells removed on entry to navy,must be a part of the training procedure. i dont actually know what systems they use on the ships but if they were not confident it would be 100% safe it would not be accepted
