American humor ain't funny!

I don't find american humor funny, when I watch "america's funiest homevideo's" for example there is nothing to laugh at because the "jokes" made by that presenter are just plain stupid! But the audience seems to find it funny... Same goes for almost all other american programs, TV serials and movies. Whats so funny about "i came to work and everybody was looking at me, i then realised that i forgot my pants" hahahaherrrrrrr.... I find british humor far better and it probally is the best humour in the world? If you ever watch a british TV serial ('Allo 'Allo, mum it aint half so hot here, etc.) you will laugh your pants off! its just so damned funny! british humour pawns american humor by far!

What are your opinions on american/british/ -insert random country here- humor?

first, America's funniest home videos is not funny, just dumb.

It depends on what you are watching...if it is somebody like Robin Williams, then you are laughing so hard you cant breathe, but if is something like friends, you would rather watch the weather channel. Humor is rare in the US.

I loved SNL during the early 90s. I think it was at it's peak there, imo. The 70s and some 80s sitcoms are really enjoyable. All in the Family, The Odd Couple, Taxi, Cheers, Three's Company, even Seinfeld. But now it's the same old thing and you can seem to predict what joke line they're going to toss in.

i love the majority of all humor. i just love to laugh. but the greatest comedian ever was Benny Hill, a brit if I remember right. And Monty Python also kicked ass (also Brits)

Re: American humor ain't funny!

There are some pretty good comedy movies. But the best are the classics. Really, I agree that much of america's humor is highly lame. I don't really watch much TV, but I do like the Simpsons. It's not always funny, but usually. Matt Groening, the creator, came from my hometown. Hee hee! Almost all the characters are named after streets in Portland. Like Flanders. Either that or named after something in the city.

X-C May 26th, 2004 02:12 PM

Re: American humor ain't funny!

Benny Hill....I hate the guy.

Americans funniest videos suck lol. It is made more for the family, not adults. It is a good show to watch with your children, like the Lion King or something. If you are looking for funny, watch things like the Simpsons (Older episodes), Malcolm in the Middle, King of the Hill for more mature humor, Frasier (Damn I loved that show), King of Queens, ect.

My favorite comedy sitcom right now would be Two and a Half Men. That show just kicks ass, plain and simple.

I also watch the beginning episodes of American Idol for humor. Not the actual competition, but the tryouts.

You are not looking hard enough, even though it is very easy to find good American humor shows.

Re: American humor ain't funny!

I don't really like watching American comedies. The only good one is Saturday Night Live, and even then its old ones were better. The Simpsons, although a classic, is getting on in its years, the past two seasons have been regurgitated crap from older episodes or rip-offs from Family Guy (which is a far superior series).

Personally I prefer watching Canadian comedy shows, SCTV (Second City TV), This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Kids in the Hall. British comedies are great too, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, Absolutely Faboulous (one of my mom's favs).

As for the funny news show you are thinking of, its The Daily Show with Jon Stewert. That show own, my fondest memory of that show is when Steve Colbert traced and blamed European terrorism to Romulus and Remus.

If you are trying to find humor never, NEVER watch an early morning news show in the US. They make the worst joke but everyone on the set finds the hilarious. The only time it came close to being funny was when on FOX (not their news channel) two of the anchors just pulled out a tin can and string telephone thing and started talking right in front of the person reporting. That was the only time i almost laughed.

Zab May 26th, 2004 03:57 PM

Re: American humor ain't funny!

We have good humor here in the US. You can't make judgements based on one show. I could just say, I don't like the Netherlands because of one person. That wouldn't be fair, now would it? But I can see why you think America's funniest home videos is stupid...because it is.

And as for British humor, well, other than Monty Python, I can't really judge it...I haven't heard/seen enough.

I find Dave Chappele's Show hilarious...and I really enjoy Friday Night Standup on Comedy Central. I also really like Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, and The Daily Show...http://gamingforums.com/images/smilies/pleased.gif

I wouldn't say American humour is less funny, its just, different, British humour is more subtle (for the most part,) where as American humour is, what I like to call, demolition charge humour, they spell it out for you without leaving enough for the imagination and in the end you feel like you are being forced to laugh rather than that its actually funny.

True mihail, not all american programs are the seem, they broadcast several american soaps and other programs. Almost all of the american shows aren't funny exept for a few like the simsons (but even that can be a bit dull sometimes). I never intended to say that ALL american shows suck because there is nothing to laugh about, a great majority does suck however. Again i don't base this statment on 1 program, we broadcast lots of american programs here in the netherlands. British humor just rules! it is (almost) always funny: monthy python, fawlty towers, 'allo 'allo, mum 't aint half hot here, mr. bean, black adder, bottom , etc. (all of which are broadcasted in the netherlands. So most of my favorit programs/shows are british, it just pawns american humor (in most cases).

I ofcourse haven't seen all american programs or the majority of american programs but we broadcast the (american) programs that are considered the most popular in the USA. So the programs that we see here are considered popular in the USA and it will therefor give us (dutch) a good impression on american humor (sinse humor is an important factor in many tv programs).

TheMirage May 26th, 2004 06:27 PM

American humor is so funny! (at times)

In general, to get american humor and find it funny, you have to be American (and yes, I am), just as with British Humor, me and my dad for instance, find most Monty Python hilarious, but most of our family members don't (sometime we think it can be a bit dull or stupid too), because they are american. And in turn, British people may not (in general) find our humor funny, because they are british.

But you all must admit, Garfield is extremely funny most of th time. He is too cool.:bows:

I personally have satalite TV, so I can judge for myself but I still agree. Most of it's rather dull. theres some shows I like, but the majority of it rather sucks. Only show I really ever liked was the X-Files And thats not even a comedy so that does not count.... but you get my point (I hope)

Simpsons, Malcolm and Futurama. Only American comedy I've ever found comical. The rest... and we get a LOT of it... is pretty dull. Obvious. May go so far as to say tedious. Especially sitcoms like Friends, Frasier, etc. Though Cheers wasn't too bad. Stand-up there is almost terrible.
And trust me, we get a LOT here. You name it, you can probably bet I've seen it at least once.

On shows like America's funniest home videos, most of the time they insert the laughter for them. I have never found anything the hosts have had to say funny, and the videos aren't that funny either.

right.... http://gamingforums.com/images/smili...rcastic%29.gif

one of our most poluar programs is "kopspijkers", its so popular that the belgian ("kopspijkers") and german ("goXX") tv have copied the concept (with permission).
Kopspijkers is a Dutch talkshow that has been running on Dutch public television since 1996. It has received the 'Zilveren Nipkow' award - which is awarded by tv critics every year for best tv-shows - in the year 2003.
It's a humoristic talkshow and stands out for it's extensive amount of cabaret. This cabaret is much like the English tv-show "Spitting Image" but with real actors. Political leaders like Jan Peter Balkenende (our prime minister/minster-president), Wouter Bos (leader of GroenLinks, a socialist party) and Gerrit Zalm are frequently impersonated. Kopspijkers is one of the best viewed programs in the Netherlands. The host of the tv-show is Jack Spijkerman (which is the basis for the title of the tv-show).
