Generally I think American comedy is crap, one exception being the late Bill Hicks.

I have been reacquainting myself with all four Blackadder series' - now this is funny.

I think you have to be American to like American humor. I have seen many funny shows in America. We do have a lot of lame ones, but sitcoms like Two and a Half Men, Malcolm in the Middle, ect, they are funny. South Park is funny for some people if you like immature humor. Jay Leno is funny too, especially when he ask idiots on the street easy questions and they don't know the answer. One time he asked someone who the vice president was, and the girl said Al Gore.

Conan O'Brien owns all other late night, especially Jay Leno and Letterman. And SNL is the original sketch comedy show, others are just cheap copies.

And really, stop bashing American comedy, I guaruntee half the shit they say you don't understand. Like they've said before, you have to be American. You're missing it all because you don't get it.

It's like me watching a Dutch show, even if I knew how to speak Dutch, I wouldn't find it funny because I wouldn't understand the 'jist' of it.

Then why do we find most of the britsh shows etc. funny? (same goes for some of the american shows)? http://gamingforums.com/images/smilies/confusedx.gif we would't be able to find it funny because it wouldn't be dutch...:uhm:

Re: American humor ain't funny!

What I mean by that is, you don't get some of the comedy because you can't relate to it. A lot of the comedy is tailored to a specific audience, for example America. When you take that comedy that is tailored to be funny for Americans, and give it to Europeans, it may not be funny because they can't necessarily relate to it.

Do you get what I mean?

The comedy is based, well some comedy, on things that will make a specific group laugh, or think of it humourisly.

Britain is in Europe, and since it's not so isolated in trends/current events as America is the comedy relates more to you, as a Dutchman. They(Britain and Holland) know the trends and the goings-on of eachother's countries. Here in America, something is funny because you know about it...put that in Holland, and well, you'd be lost, and it'd be just stupid in your opinion.

Poop.

I find casual comedy a lot funnier then in shows where people act all wild and shit. Like casual jokes that pop up everywhere that make you laugh. Jokes that relate to real life are also funny, in my opinion. That is why I like certain sitcoms.

As for comedians, some suck, but I like ones that bring up fat jokes and shit, because those are always funny. I relate more to real life comedy then wacky shit, like you would see on Americas Funniest Videos, which aren't that funny.

Has anyone seen "Les Visiteurs"? Although I can hardly speak any French, I still found it incredibly funny.

Re: American humor ain't funny!

I don't like British humor because I find it to be too wild, and too much slapstick humor. I am not into that. Plus the jokes from Monty Python all suck, in my opinion of course. However, my parents like the show, and I respect that. People like differant things, it just depends on how you grow up. I think that Europeans are more into wilder humor, like you could see in Monty Python. I like more casual humor, like in Frasier, Two and a Half Men, ect.

Zab May 27th, 2004 07:34 PM

Re: American humor ain't funny!

Ah, Frasier was a good show---One of my favorites. Did you catch the last episode...It wrapped things up quite well. But, like they say: "all good things must come to an end". I've also caught some of two and a half men..It's pretty funny. Looks like Charlie Sheen's making a comeback! :p

Personally, I don't find what's all that funny about Monty Python...But, Hey, if it floats their boats...

OMG... American comedy is the best. Have you ever seen the Office, its possibly the worst show I have ever seen. Comeon, in america you got, Seinfeld, Curb your enthusiasm, chappel show, and don't forget Conan O'Brien.
I'll admit modern sitcoms are the worst, like friends. Stupid humor there, but really if there is one thing american's are best at, its comedy.

/agreed.

I rented the 1st season of "The Office" thinking I would laugh my ass off...at a show that's so "critically aclaimed for it's comedic brilliance"...yet I watched one episode, and proceeded to throw out the dvd, and shoot the guy at the video rental shop.

:O! American humor sucks? American humor... SUCKS?!

What about South Park, Chappel's Show, The Daily Show, Comedy Central Presents, Arrested Development (too bad it was taken off the air), Family Guy, The Simpson's, Kill Bill, The Ring (god, so cheesy), Van Helsing (most cheesy movie EVER), Starsky and Hutch (the move, with Ben Stiller).

I could go on.... but I'm not going to, but these are all extreamyl funny movies/shows!

bollywood is more popular because of its pan indian reach

i find my humor funny. i get it, and i say exactly what gets me...sometimes my friends will have a good one every once in a while. (well, my one friend really makes me laugh. his humor is quite smiliar to mine.)

i dont really find comedians all that funny... they stuff is mostly crap.

The best era of SNL was that of Phil Hartman and Dana Carvey. They lifted that program up from its mid-80s mediocrity to a golden age. Second, the era of Chase, Belushi and Martin. Also good was Kids in the Hall.
Three words:
Canadians. Are. Funny.

Oh yeah, and my favorite standup guy is Todd Barry.
My favorite funny actors are Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and John Cleese. (Hooray for dry British wit!) Oh, and props out to Fawlty Towers, which I get on PBS, and Monty Python, who resides in all its glory in my DVD case.

Well all people find their own humor funny, if you don't find your own humor funny you would make other jokes (or none). So this is a little obvious Aeg. and IMO british humor pwns american humor! go Britain!

the Naked Gun movies? yes they where pretty funny, but i said that i don't dislike all american (humor) programs/shows. Leslie Nielsen made some funny ads for a mobilephone compaggy here in holland about a year or so ago, they where pretty funny!

"British humor isnt that bad"? Its the best! it rules! You should watch some more british programs (already mentioned in this thread).

It has been widely assumed that the recreation of 'The Office' in America won't work simply because Americans don't 'get' that kind of humour. I see that so far that theory is panning out OK :p.

Re: American humor ain't funny!

Hmm, well, I've seen a lot of British comedy such as Mr. Bean, Monthy Python, Kids in the Hall, and Benny Hill. Monthy Pyhton is pointless humor. Sometimes this is funny, but I hated Monthy Python. Mr. Bean is an extremely shitty show. What is so damned funny about some random retard tripping over shit all day? Kids in the Hall is just.....awful. They're gay and not funny. What's so funny about some queers dressed as women? Benny Hill, more pointless humor, only shittier. Oh yeah, watch him chase some chick all day while listening to the most annoying music ever. This is the British shows I've seen, and they suck. Howhever, American comedy is the best. There's so many funny shows here, and just because a show is popular doesn't mean it's funny, mind you. Friends is popular. Enough said. I'm going to post a list of some funny shows, and when you watch at least 10 of them, don't flat out say American comedy isn't funny.

Simpsons
Futurama
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Family Guy
Seinfield
The Drew Carey Show
Whose Line is it Anyway?
Chappelle's Show
South Park
The Daily Show with John Stewart
Insomniac
The Conan O' Brian Show
Saturday Night Live (The Old Episodes)
Mad T.V. (SNL's replacement)
Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn

Now a short list of some funny movies...

Old School
Super Troopers
Dickie Roberts
Tommy Boy
Black Sheep
Anger Management
Scary Movie 1, 2, and 3

And finally, a short list of good American stand up comedians...

Lewis Black
Dane Cook
Greg Giraldo
Daniel Tosh
Chris Rock
Robin Williams (I don't know if he's British. If he is, somebody tell me.)
Rodney Dangerfield
Jerry Sienfield
George Carlin
Brian Poseane (I think that's how you spell it.)
Buddy Hacket
Ralphie May (He should of won the contest, not Dat Phan)
Rich Vos (Was also funnier than Dat Phan)

Okay, just sample a few of those and then make your assumption. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good.

I've sampled nearly all of those, and found maybe 1 or 2 at most remotely funny. Even the Simpsons isn't hysterical, just mildly chuckle-inducing. Perhaps you should take your own advice and watch more than four British shows...

X-C June 9th, 2004 06:04 AM

Re: American humor ain't funny!

Americans aren't going to like British humor, plain and simple. A lot of those British shows seem to be where they hit eachother or some stupid shit and laugh about it. Or in Mr. Beans case you have some moron walking around who is a mute who tries to socialize with people. I hate the show. And my parents forced me to watch Benny Hill when I was a kid. I will never recover. It is about a fat, ugly horn dog who tries to hook up with chicks. Not funny at all.

I think that History of the World is a British movie, and I will say that is the only British humor I have seen that I find remotely funny.

And to Mr. Matt, I doubt you have seen all those shows as most don't air in Britain.

Clarkson had his own comedy talk show a while back, of the same name. He had a large, 3D map of the world behind his desk, and if I remember rightly, he pulled America off and threw it in the bin :p. He also did microwave experients, and used a train set to demonstrate exactly how hard it is to run a rail network and thus the reasons why British transport is such a waste of time.

Maybe 95% of the ones that were showed in America. There are a shitload of swedish comedies here but they don't show them outside of Sweden, and I bet that there are alot of comedies in other countries too.
