Pasted the entire pic as a new layer, burned it, and made a 3 pixel selection, cut the middle and added a white/light blue drop shadow.

Looks to me like he made a new layer, filled with a light blue, then used the polygon marguee tool to cut out the shape. Then he brought the opacity down and pilow embossed it.

I copied the image after I was done with it and made my selection. Then, I deleted the center and adjusted the levels to make it brighter. Finally, I used a bevel and outer glow.

I'm trying to spread out in graphic arts, i've done pretty well with fractal wallpapers so now i am trying sigs, avatars, and Terragen. But that doesn't mean i won't stop making my Fractals.

I rather learn how to make sigs before going to animations and stuff like that.

You don't need to get into animations if you don't want to, but photo manipulation is one of the best ways to learn as much as you can. Then, once you can do that, signatures will be a piece of cake. www.worth1000.com has a lot of tutorials on photo manipulation. You can also try using what you know in order to develop your own techniques. What I like the most about messing with photos is the challenge of figuring out how to do something your own way in order to create things that don't exist.
