Halford has got some pretty heavy shit, I've only got one of his albums - he's got a great voice.

If you want to try something a little heavier and faster, check out Children of Bodom.

Not better for starters, but shure, it is very good music. Ever tried Venom? They are not better though, but are probably one of the first Black metal bands. Their first album is from 1981, and sounds heavier than Maiden sounded in 1981.
