Re: punk rock

what are you talking about? The Ramones and Sex Pistols ARE punk. Basically they, along with a couple other bands, invented punk. NOFX and Greenday are pop-punk, which is a sub genre of punk. If any of those aren't punk, then what IS? And I love punk.

If the Ramaones and Sex Pistols aren't punk, then who the hell is?

Re: punk rock

are you serious? the ramones and the sex pistols are media made advertisements for "punkey" clothes, the ramones get credit for being the first punk band, but the exploited were playing before they even formed. johnny rotten goes on about "no future" and then flies off in his pivate jet and invests his money. he goes on about anarchy but in reality if he were in an anarchist society he would be killed and no one would want to make his bondage clothes or the knox for his hair. there's no such thing as pop-punk, its just a fancy word for pop-rock sellout. pop and punk are total oposites.

Re: punk rock

The Dead Kennedys, eh? Would that be the same Dead Kennedys fronted by Jello Biafra, who was beaten up on outside Berkeley's Gilman Street club by five thugs for being a "sellout rock star?"

No mention of Fugazi? Bad Brains? The Germs? The eldritch Misfits? Minor Threat? How about Sick Of It All, the Adolescents or the U.K. Subs?

I'd call you a hypocrite, but no, you're right; you're the only real punk here. The rest of us are all poseurs, because you said so. http://forums.filefront.com/images/s...rcastic%29.gif

Punk was good in its day, but its all sold out and spent up.

Green day are more pop than puck, and the discgrace that is linkin parks rock/rap.................. It doesnt deserve being talked about. Now, rock n fucking roll, and metal is where its at.

Bands like velvet revolver is where the musics at.

Well, that depends on you. I'm pretty lenient myself however if you push I'll push back.

Re: punk rock

In my opinion there have only been three real punk bands; the ramones, sex pistols, and the clash. Theres mopre than a few others that get honorable mention... but yeah.

Elem3nt February 18th, 2005 03:58 PM

Re: punk rock

I'm sorry but there are plenty of modern punk bands. You can tell by the distinct sound. I agree that green day is not punk and has a more rockish sound. NoFx is most definetly a modern punk band. I think the only reason you say they are not is due to their popularity. I am ever so sick of people labeling music. Why don't you take it for what it is instead of being so cynical.

Who cares about "proper" to me if it has that distinct raunchy sound, it's punk.

Most of nofx's lyrics are based around this, so yeah by definition nofx IS a punk band. But also by this definition, linkin park would be punk....

I find a distinct sound in punk and I believe nofx has it in spades. I think some people give them a bad rap due to their mass appeal.

Re: punk rock

ok how come no one here has said anything about rancid if they are not punk who is apart from ramones and the clash. greenday i would say are a punk band as are nofx, there is a word in the english dictionary and that is EVOLUTION!!!!!!! Bands like the ramones were the first band that made punk noticable to the masses , which then got uk punk bands noticed and signed to record lables.Greenday evoloved from the ramones using simple 3 cords song structure, if you play guitar you would see the structure of ramones songs and greenday songs are the same, but as time has gone by greenday have evoloved into the great band they are today, still pushing the envolope and not caring what people think about them, that is what punk is about, doing what you want when you want and not giving a fuck about anyone else.

Back to Rancid they are punk and will always be punk they have never signed to a major label, they did have the chance to but started there own label and released there albums on that. There are some really good street punk bands over here in the uk the likes of Capdown and five knucle. So in conclusion evolution is the big word here, as these bands grow older so do there views on the world change. And at the moment with all this war crap going on its good bands like greenday and nofx are still around to piss people off( only wish rage agaisnt the machine were still around).

sorry there is alot to read but it had to be said.

It's the same way with Green Day. They can only make so many Dookies and Warnings before they get popular and hardcore idiots consider them mainstream, therefore no longer a good band. Not everything has to be an underground affair.

Ahhh I think you will find that the one people that try and put names to punk are 13 year olds trying to fit into a certain click. Much like our original poster. Enjoy music for what it is, not for what your friends tell you.
