| Weblog (Blog) Systems Weblogs, or 'blogs' for short, are places people use for online diaries and journals. Instead of writing it by hand, you can type it and be able to search, archive and edit entries whenever you want. You can choose one of two ways. You can either get a blog from a site offering them, or install one on your own webspace. If you're interested in one from another site, try Blogger. If you want one on your own webspace, meaning no advertisements or redirects, you can consider some of the following programs: My Recommendation: WordPress (Example 1 | Example 2 | Example 3) WordPress is a powerful, small and efficient blog program. It allows you to easily add, update and edit posts, and also allows you to create custom pages. You can theme WordPress easily, simply by uploading the theme to a specific directory on the FTP server. Download Others: Nucleus b2evolution List of Others Content Management Systems Content Management Systems, or CMS's, basically allow you to put up a pre-made website. The most popular CMS's allow you to post news, polls, downloads, graphics, forums, and lots of other gubbins. Customising is usually easy, but most programs come with some sort of intellectual copyright - meaning you have to keep some sort of display of the original developer on your site. My Recommendation: Mambo Open Source (Example 1 | Example 2) Mambo is pretty much all you need to start a small-to-medium community website. It is highly configurable and fully editable. You can post articles, short news snippets and links, all with their own area. It also comes with a banner function, allowing you to advertise easily. Download Others: PHP-Nuke phpWebSite phpwcms Discussion Boards Discussion Boards, much like the FileFront Forums you're on now, allow you to talk in passive mode with people from around the world. You can format text, create a profile, share images and start threads using Discussion Board software. As with Blogs, you've got two options. Either host your own or get one hosted from another website. If you want a board hosted by someone else, try Proboards. Be aware though that they often advertise on hosted forums. If you want to host your own, read on. My Recommendation: vBulletin (Example 1 | Example 2) vBulletin does cost money, but it is so far ahead of the rest when it comes to hi-tech forum software. Its administration control panel is far superior to its closest rival, Invision Power Board's admin centre. vBulletin holds the majority market share, so the majority of modifications are made for vB. Download (requires purchase) Others: Invision Power Board 2.x (requires purchase) MyBB (very vBulletin-like, but free) phpBB Simple Machines YaBB Image Galleries Galleries allow you to host your own photos and make comments about them. The advantage of galleries on the web is that you can show your photos and pictures to all your friends and family without leaving your house. You can also add captions, amongst other information, and devide these into seperate albums and catagories. My Recommendation: Coppermine (Example) This is a SourceForge project, which always shows class and innovation. This is a very powerful piece of kit, which allows comments to be left about photos, administration permission levels, members, catagories and all other things you come to expect in a gallery. Download Others: Gallery 4images SUGGESTIONS, COMMENTS, ADDITIONS ALL WELCOME
