Well I find that when you are in the texture selection menu if you click right click on a wall it will automaticly paste the texture you've got selected. I know its not exactly what you wanted but its something. Im new to mapping with Hammer so I'll probibly be wrong sometimes.

on modsonline.com under the download section of tuts fro Hl2 you can find a video tutorial called First room, when you look at that video all your first questions will be answered. it's the best way to get started with hammer, realy!

Maya sux , its totally useless for rendering scenes and its problematic in exporting stuff from it to hl2 or any other game, 3dsmax is the best tool for modelling right after Studio 4d (studio4d IS NOT used for games, it is used for adverts which use models, like cars on the bilboards)

Re: question about modding skinning and mapping

Ok I looked up XSI on google. Its IS the best moddling tool to go with when moddling for source mainly because Valve used it when creating Half Life 2. To be perfectly honest though unless your creating things like new tables and chairs, it would be much easier to re-skin the existing models using paint shop or something.
