how do i install models?
 

i cant figure out how to get models to work. i tried extracting it to the source mods folder but i donno.....

You need to extract them to the original models postition in the mod's directory. for example

E:\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\[mod name]\models\weapons

For new weapons.

It probably depends which model you are replacing, as if i am not mistaken it replaces many.

But basically when HL2 loads a model it will look in the .GCFs, if a model is placed in the HL2 folder at the same location as the original in the GFC the GCF's file will be 'overidden' and new model will be shown instead.
The folder structre of the GCF can be seen by opening one with GCFscape (sp). Alternatively usually models are packed in such a way you only need to paste 'models' and 'materials' folders directly into the root directory of the game and overwrite any folders it prompts you too.

Default installation (replaces Alyx):
Extract the files into a folder (don't use winzip).
Look for these 2 folders:
MODELS
MATERIALS
Copy the folders to this folder:
\steam\steamapps\username\half life 2\hl2
If you did it right, it will ask you if you want to replace some files. Click YES.
That's it.
