Small Console Problem with Half Life

Hi, I've played though half life 1 a couple of times so i decided to use the console to mess around a bit. I created a shortcut and added "-console" (without ") to the end of the target so it is now

C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -console

That is what i did with Half life 2 and i assumed it would work with half life 1 as well.

So i started a new game, Typed "sv_cheats 1" and then i typed "god" God mode turned on and all was grand so i went off to start the experiment and in turn start the game. I was jumping from very high heights and taking no damage and after the experiment i ran though the red laser and wasn't damaged at all.

Then i came to the first secutity officer. The one who asks
"What are these things? and why are they wearing science uniforms?"
Either he shot me or the zombie hit me because i lost a bit of health. I assumed the cheat didn't take friendly fire into account and went on. Then i noticed that crab heads hitting me was doing damage and i went to the console and typed "God" again but nothing happened.

I tried typing a lot of things such as sv_cheats 1, god, noclip, sv_cheats 0, sv_cheats 2 but i got no responce other then - "sv_cheats" changed to "X" - (x being 0,1 or 2)

So does anyone know why this happened and how i can fix it? if so thanks

ps: i started a new game and tried the cheats again but they wouldn't work there either.
