.22 aint gonna cause ANY hydrostatic shock. doesnt have the size or impact energy. What it will do is create a shiatload of bleed channels from the round fishtailing and and fragmenting. that kinda trauma is hard to patch up and hard as hell to heal.

I thought .22s causing unusually nasty wounds was a myth. To me it seems a .22 would go nearly straight into the person. My thinking has shifted towards the 9mm because if worst comes to worst you want all the ammo you can get and the right hollowpoint should provide adequate stopping power. 9mm also costs nearly half as much as .45 and significantly less than .40, so you could practice more often. The miltary although would be restricted to ball, so .45 would fit that role better.

.22s dont have the necessary grain weight to be needle guns so to speak. They are a tad long axis wise and when they hit flesh they crumple pretty readily allowing for a violent J shape path. As this is occuring the jecket tends to seperate from the lead core and fragment further provided the range was fairly close say within 20 yards of the muzzle. Any further and case seperation generally wont occur

Is that picture in inches or centimeters? Either way it look pretty lethal with all that fragmentation. I thought rounds that shredded like that were against "The Laws of War" or something like that though. Or maybee I am thinking hollowpoint.

Its in inches. The Hague accords vaguely prohibit Expanding, exploding, and Jacketed Soft Point rounds. prefered depth of penetration as far as the FBI is concerned is 9-12 inches.

The 9mm clearly can't compete with the larger rounds.

All handgun rounds practical for combat or self-defense are poor stoppers There have been cases when police shot a perpetrator 5 times before dropped with .45 hydra-shoks. Being able to tho shoot quickly and accurately takes precedent over counting on that one .44 magnum. As for 9mm not being able to compete with larger rounds, the 9mm competes in ways other than pain and damage caused by being shot (9mm and .45 leave nearly the same sized permanent wound cavitites). I would like to note that no coventional small arms ammunituon can cause hydro-static shock.
