The chassis was designed to carry a maximum of 24-25 tons. That's why it's armour was never improved further.

The panther II would trully have been the best solution.
PzIV crews hung tank tracks from the hul and turret as improvised armor so it was possible to incorporate the thickness of the tracks into the armor.

It wouldnt have been that difficult to beef up the suspension with heavier torsion bars and incorporated wider tracks. But since the Panther was intended to replace the PzIV I can uinderstand why not much effort was put into furthering the design.

Althought the panther was a sweet machine, I think the T34/85 was a much better production tank, as it was very good overall, mechanically reliable and it could be mass produced easily (the panther lacks those two last qualities, althought later versions were more reliable). Of course if we can include the T44 and JS3 as WW2 tanks.. I'd take one of those two, especially the JS3

The IS3 should on paper be a very good tank. But i have read that it wasn't all that good at al. It had allot of faults in the design and was mechanicly really unreliable.

I got this from battlefield.ru

Quote:
The IS-3 was in mass production until mid-1946. Overall, there were 2,311 tanks produced. Unfortunately, at the beginning of its career, the IS-3 suffered from many serious problems related to design flaws. The most serious were: an unreliable engine, an extremely unreliable gear-box, and defective hull elements.
After all modifications, the weight of the IS-3 had increased to 48.8 tones. Despite all the changes and expenses of modernisation, the tank still had many deficiencies and remained unreliable.
Unfortunately, the IS-3 had had its day, and after the modernisation, all of the tanks were sent to storage areas and rarely used.
So in theory it should have been a good tank, but it seems not as good as anyone think's it is.

The T44 on the other hand seemed allot more promising.

But it did make the west shit themselves. The IS tanks really wern't all that good. Same for the King Tiger.

Again, its not just the armour that counts. Its how reliable the tank is. I would take a Panzer IVH over a Tiger or King Tiger anyday.

I don't know many tanks, but for me is the Tiger the best tank of WW2.

Í've read somewhere, don't exacly know where anymore, but I've read that if the tiger was in the hands of a good driver that it wasn't all that unreliable. Because if you knew how to handle it the transmission could survive much longer.

oh well i guess since my thread wasnt moved over here i'll just state my opinion on this one. The T-34-83 was the best tank of WW2. It was realiable had a good gun and could be produced quickly.

But I still would rather have a Panther G in a one on one.

The Panther was by the way also not that difficult to produce, because there where in about 2 years 6500 Panther's produced. That is pretty impressive considered that germany wasn't exacly the country with the biggest production power.
