| TERRIBLY SORRY I REVIVED A THREAD AS OLD AS THE USSR, I was searching on google and then i forgot to check the status. Now I can't delete it. Actually if you consider the population, you have to realize that Asian battles were MUCH larger than any other ancient battle. For the subjugation of Koguryo (Current North Korea and Manchuria, the Su dynasty mobilized approxmimatly 1.1 million men. Out of them, 300,000 broke off as an elite regiment in an effort to pass the well constructed Koguryo fortresses. Since they could not keep up with the Koguryo army, they started retreating... only to be met by a... WATERSLIDE!!! ... a planned bursting of a damn smashed right through the marching army. Only 3000 lived to tell the tale... Koguryo maintained a standing army of approx, 50,000, with 300,000 troops in times of war. --- This is not the biggest battle, during the Warring States Period that brough the first large unified China, approxminatly 1.5 million people died during emperor Qin Shi Huang's rule alone. 500,000 of them were in one battle, in which the army of Chu/Zhou (?) were massacred after they surrendered. Very horrible indeed. Which would bring up the point of the total men involved in the battle to be around 1 million troops. (Both of these Asian wars are not exagerations, I hope you can trust me on that one.) --------- I have to agree on that Stalingrad was the biggest battle, although the Soviets didn't have 200,000,000 troops There is a possibility that it is Kursk though. (1.1 mil Soviets vs .9 mil Germans) It certainly is the biggest Tank battle. Funny enough this army almost matches the current army of the USA and Russia combined Last edited by MotherRussia; January 11th, 2005 at 09:14 PM.. |

| The longest battle was most likely something out of the books of world war I, due to trench fighting, I'm sure battles went on for ever, namely the french/british and german ones. And I'm talking about battles not seiges that may have lasted a months at a time. or perhaps stalingrad due to the fact there was almost always some sort of fighting going on.

Gettysburg was the largest battle ever in the Western Hemisphere. Kursk was probably the largest air battle ever. The Battle of the Bulge was the largest battle fought by the US. The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle.

Between the Romans and the Slave leader? Alexander the Great and the Persian King? I know that the Battle of Kursk was the biggest tank battle. Quote:

| I think you mean Romans versus Sparticus Alexander the Great versus Darius the Great IIRC the biggest tank battles were 1) Kursk - July 1943 in Russia 2) Sidi Rezegh - November 1941 in Libya 3) Brody-Dubno - June 1941 in what is now Ukraine near Lvov, Lwow, not sure what the current spelling is. As far as the number of men involved and equipment involved I would still say Kursk was the largest.

| The Somme Kursk D-Day Bordinio Roke's Drift (OK not the largest battle, but surely one of the most fierce.) |
