Re: Half-Life vs FEAR First off, Xilex; you're entitled to your opinion but could you please quit spamming about going and buying Battlefield 2 and COD 2? I really do understand where you're coming from about it, but you've done so in two threads and multiple posts and it's really getting tiresome. Anyway, on topic, my two megs: Half-Life 2 is extremely efficient when it comes to system resources, especially with the resulting graphics (even when antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are set at medium to high levels). The quality of it- thoroughly engrossing story and the cinematic storytelling that the orignal HL pioneered and HL2 continued- is unmatched by any other game it was up against, and even when not counting CS:S or any other port/mod, it has almost endless replayability. F.E.A.R. does for me what Doom 3 attempted (and failed) to do: provide a genuinely scary FPS experience. I found that while I enjoyed what I could play of D3, it was more shock horror, gore and revulsion at its more frightening points (for example, the 'help me' cinematic that first introduces you to the Lost Souls, or the trapped zombie that you suddenly realize has no lower jaw, or the cinematic with the flayed and impaled dead person and the Maggots) and aside from a sort of interest brought on by the graphic quality (no pun intended) of the cins and main game, I found no particular desire to play these scenes over again. F.E.A.R. on the other hand is designed much more closely to what I would consider a supernatural/psychological horror story. Its pacing is excellent, the realism of firefights, received damage and placement of equipment, computer player AI tactics, and sheer excitement and suspense- even if you keep getting nailed at a couple of points and reloading the quicksave multiple times like me :)- not to mention incredible graphics (I submit that are comparable in many ways to HL2) and ambient sounds- make F.E.A.R. as a gaming experience more than worth the original price tag. -Worker. |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR I like the story of HL2 better and also the gameplay, I just don't like ghosts and stuff in FPS games but I do like Aliens etc. I like the story of HL2 better because I love Futuristic "wars" (especially with nucleair bombs and resistances) |

I know what you mean. Someone actually went over a short, concise summary of F.E.A.R.'s background story and the plotline in the game (i.e. about the little girl, the Vault and Alice Wade's mother, among other things) a month or two back with me, and when I realized some of the plot- based on that telling and what I'd already seen in-game- I can honestly say it was the scariest plot I've ever seen in a modern FPS. That I'm still enjoying making my way through the game at my own pace while knowing how it ends is impressive in and of itself. Half-Life has better pacing, I think, and gives you more options for action and allows you to make some mistakes and not end up dying or busting yourself into a corner if you chose not to do one particular, exclusive thing. I don't want to give a whole lot of the story in F.E.A.R. away having only been out for a few months, but a perfect example of this was my first encounter with the 'little girl' last night; to get out of it without dying (and I did the first time, not realizing it would happen) there is only one course you can take to make it past and through the level, and for me it never seemed obvious and required some trial and error, and there isn't a whole lot of time to do so and make up your mind as to what to do. -Worker. |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR Ok i'll stop but, you should compare the two from ratings from some of the better game sites like ign.com or gamespy.com really they each hold nice qualities, FEAR has a nice graphics if eveything is turned on but as a downfall you need a nice computer to do that, also it's fun in the sense of scary not like doom jump out and eat you alive but more in the classic sense basic fear like the title,( the plot isn't bad HL2 just has a better one), and mulitplayer is chaotic, fast, and extreme. Ok then HL2 has a better story and it has graphics you would expect from any good game. If you like futuristic games and a good story get this because the graphics are still nice. Another thing this is from a series so if you play all the games you'll get a deeper sense of the story and with the following games about what happened after HL2 coming out like Aftermath and HL2 Episode 2 you can experience more of this except it'll be improved. Also the Ravenholm chapter in HL2 can creap you out, it's like fusion of jump out and eat your face and the classic sense. So whichever you want go out and get. Personally I though HL2 was more enjoyable because of the nice mods especially Garry's mod. Also Worker i've only said to go buy CoD2 and BF2 in this thread. |

Consider me in your debt, and please accept my thanks. :bows: On another forum in a similar situation I found myself heckled and harassed into silence for speaking my mind to someone who was doing something similar. I agree with you; while even F.E.A.R. runs quite well on my rig, I've heard from many people that it really does suck up a computer's resources to run it at higher resolutions and graphics detail. I will submit that I find myself considerably more comfortable with Half-Life 2, having been a fan of the original HL and its brothergames (CS/BS/OF) and mods well before I ever had a computer capable of running it or Steam. As for where you'd mentioned recommending we buy Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield to, I stand corrected, and I'm sorry I got a bit impatient with you. Part of that's my own bias; there have been many military-themed games available recently (including Day of Defeat:Source, which I will be buying next week locally, and the original DOD which I have), and I was getting a little irritated with hearing about them. I apologize for blowing off steam at you. Let me know what you think of 'Concerned' if you decide to take a look at it, okay? :) -Worker. |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR Crew; Just curious to see if this works... -Worker. EDIT: Awesome, it did! |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR .....Umm.... your welcome? Oh and the comics are great thanks for the link. The new game from Steam Red Orchestra is pretty fun. Go try it out and look out for sven coop 3.5 for HL1 and SvenCoop 2 for HL2, I can't believe it's not a supersoldier! No jk but they have the super soldier in it which is supposed to be in HL2 Aftermath and Episode 2 i believe they said. Go for HL2 if u like action sci-fi and .... somehow that turns into building stuff and if your com's not the greatest. |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR WOW.Really thanks for posting the comics just read up to the newest one or the postcard, or possibly the end but still thanks. |
Re: Half-Life vs FEAR I have played Half-Life 2, and seen F.E.A.R images / movies. I must say, F.E.A.R does looks more impressive then Half-Life 2 in graphics way. Yet, Half-Life 2 is one of the best games for modifications. So I'm choosing for Half-Life 2. |
