| well the Borealis is definitely not a last minute thing... if you browse through the models (in the original HL2) you see "props_Borealis" which are some items that look like they would belong on a ship. But basically, it is the research vessel of the rival science team of black mesa, although it's purpose is never made clear.

| question : why the heck would a deserted/abandoned research vessel be SO dangerous to gordon freeman that even the amazing Eli Vance who escaped from the Black mesa facility WITHOUT ANY ARMED HELP needs to warn you... (unless it is a research vessel of bio stuff like mutants{ evolved stalkers?? }) p.s. is eli vance and issac kleiner the scientists in black mesa facility the ones that were beside that control panel when it went kaput ...... but still went on with the experiment???? and after the experiment u go back up to find kleiner sorta like injured?

| check this out: ![]() This pretty much confirms the relations between black mesa and appature science. I think that this uber technology that is on the Borealis could be the portal technology, but odds are that it is something else.

| well they don't like them I also think that Black Mesa was influnced by Michael Crichton's book Timeline, Black Rock research facility was developing technology to go to a seperate universe, and Black Mesa in HL1 did the same thing

It's a ship. Owned by Aperture Science. Disappeared from its docks years ago (literally). That's pretty much all we know about it. We can postulate that it has some manner of portal technology aboard, given its disappearance and the company that owns it, but we'll find out for sure in Episode 3. Quote:
Additionally, given the sudden and dramatic disappearance of the Borealis, it's probably dangerous or unstable technology that could pose a threat to anybody if it's used. Quote:
