1.4 beta feedback Ok peeps... very shortly I will be releasing the 1.4 beta to the players that have expressed an interest in helping polish this patch :) I will expect you to give your honest & constructive feedback, please use this thread to post your comments and discuss the changes with the other testers. A brief rundown of what is different in WildWest version 1.4: New weapons: Volley rifle Colt revolving rifle Molotov bomb Other weapon changes: new duel colts all new weapon models all new weapon code all new weapon sounds Miners & Doctors now have the choice of either the Henry or the colt rifle, and can drop & pickup either of these weapons in game. Sheriffs / Captains & Soldiers have 2 main weapons, you can choose you combination in the limbo screen, and drop & pickup any weapon which that class is allowed in game (i.e. drop a Henry & pickup a colt rifle, or drop the volley gun & pickup duel colts) Doctors have a new responsibility, they give out Molotov's with there health bags, they have unlimited Molotov's, but their use is linked to their weapon power bar. all other classes can carry 2 Molotov's, except miners which cannot carry any, they however can hold many fused bombs. Game speed has been increased by around 7%, stamina lasts longer, and is linked to run speed.. more realistic player "bob" linked directly to player speed. all guns now have a recoil. footsteps now have a spur jingling ;) weapon ammo amounts / accuracy ect may be adjusted after testing, so I'll not mention them here. I am hoping to have this update uploaded for our testers today Sunday 22 June 2003. Feedback When I spawned as cowboy in saloon, there didn't appear to be any music playing (piano) - though if I moved slightly I could hear it very faintly. I could hear it louder if outside. |

Dude, what can I say, you are GOD!!! Not to knock 1.14b, but that classic feel is back. The only thing I'd change is the spur sound. I'd knock it down 30% or something. Great work! |
SPURS I liked the sound of the spurs jangling as it added effect, but after a while it did sort of start to grate. So yes, I would say reduce it a bit - but not enough to be unnoticeable by others :) |
Well Hewster you've done a great job there, there are a couple of things that do need looking at though. I know it's a beta test but some things will need sorting. 1. The spurs are too loud. It does get rather annoying after a while, maybe they want turning down a tad. 2. The pianist is a playing but very low music, you can hardly hear him. 3. The single colt dragoon seems a bit big and in the wrong postion. When you compare it to the colt rifle it's nearly as big. I think that does need reducing in size just a tad. It looks like your holding a cannon rather than a colt. The model is great it's just the size of it in relation to the game. 4. How come there is a delay in picking up ammo and medic bags. I noticed this last night. Is that supposed to happen? I think that needs changing back to how it was before. Another question for you. The wagon near the bank, I don't recall being able to drop through it. Was it solid before? If so then you can drop through the roof of it. I think that's all really. You've learnt by past mistakes which is good. I really don't think there is a need to change any of the accuracy settings as I would say you have them bang on. Overall the gameplay has improved ten fold and I think that the finished patch will be the best yet. All we need now is Gringo to finish his map off and we're on a winner. Hi folks, i enjoyed it very much yesterday night. Good work from Hewster !! 1) if you are hit, you`re getting extremely slow. i thought i need from the stables to the saloon 10minutes ;-)) Is this by design ?? 2) I was very astonished (is this the right word for :eek: ??) when i drop a medipack, i see a medipack and a molotov ? 3) the bug with the open window in the bank is gone (thanks) 4) Some ways are no very long. e.g. starting at the saloon..... mmhhh, but for the gameplay I think it`s better...... is there any testserver around where we can test that stuff round the clock ?? pOOh |
I know Hewster has left his server running and Lone wolf are running the beta. So intensive testing won't be a problem. :) |
Piano music ... mmm perhaps the new spawn points are effecting the sound I'll look into it :) Spurs... I agree they are a bit too loud I will adjust :) Single colt model... I agree Ammo-box's & health bag delay ... yes I added a delay on purpose, to stop those pesky doctors running away & giving themselves lots of health, making them very hard to kill.. I will continue to look into weather this is a good idea Speed change when injured.. yep I've not really changed this from previous versions.. I don't intend changing this.. NOTE: stamina is now also linked to speed.. stamina should be saved for emergencies.. try and keep it 75% full, so you have the speed to "run away" when in danger :) Doctors now give out molotov ammo for other players.. I may reduce the time it takes them to "sink" though, as there seemed to be a lot of bottles laying around last night ! bank window bug... its only 1/2 fixed !! lol but will be addressed again when a final "compile" of the map is done for final release :) test-servers.. yes I will be asking Danny at LoneWolf to keep his server running the test, as mine is on my home system, and not entirely reliable! and every time I check my e-mail players will get lag !! lol also I would like people to play on LoneWolf, as this is a Linux server and needs testing. I really like the new sounds and a happy balance on firing speed from the Original which kicked ass to the 1.14 which was dull. I havnt tried all the weapons...wondering if that 6 shooter rifle (I forget the name) should take longer to load...I havent used it in game yet, but Imagine its powerful...but I never play soldier anyway. Gun sounds have lots of depth and are reminiscent of spaghetti westerns...VERY cool! Spurs are cool...I can live with them the way they are. Molitav's are the shit! Nice help for the medics only getting one grenade. I like the idea of dropping them too...but it freaked me out the first time I saw it. |
played on the lonewolf server for a while last night and tried the majority of the weapons which were all spot on to be honest except for the size on that colt which has already been mentioned. i quite like the sound on the spurs, and made me laugh tbh, although agree could be toned down a bit. not to keen on the med pack delay though, hhhhhhhmmmmmmm maybe thats cause i am a medic and i am one of those pesky medics that run away giving myself health :p lol. didnt really notice the piano though :dance: although i will be looking tonight. good job hewster. how long is the server going to be running for. |
Most things are covered except that the Moltovs are a bit too powerful. I only glanced through a splash just before it was about to go out and it still infliced the full 100 hit points.:eek: As to the med pack delay, try not dropping them all in same place. I now leave a spread for teammates to patch back up on. As to the Ammo packs that won't be picked up if ammo stash is full, I don't like that. Yes I usually the medic that will have folks snake the ammo from, but I also like the idea of grabbing stuff if the enemy is about to get it. i.e. don't leave that out there grab it. All in all, haven't been able to really 'break' anything. Also note to folks new to version 1.4... the gatling gun needs to be 'forced' to start now. No more quick pulls for a quick shot, you'll find that it appears to jam and over heat. To fire it just hold the fire button down for more than a second and it'll start to shoot. (I like this, no more idling, or sniping w/ them :agreed: ) |
I just played two sets with El Pollo Loco. I must say, the new weapons have brought the game back to life. I think I've decided I like the spurs. It means you have to walk a lot more when you are on the attack. The walk function was pointless before. So it makes attacking more fun. And it makes defense more fun since you have to use all of your senses. Before, you couln't reliably here someone approaching carelessly. Though in reality the first thing I would do is shoot them off of my boots.... It got me accused of cheating but it was sure fun. It's more realistic in the mine too as things would echo more and even if I couldn't quite see where he was below me I could here him coming. I would have hoped to get more of a directional feel from my sound card but that may be because I've got a fan on either side of me up here. (no air conditioning) I don't know if you changed this area but it appears so...the list of servers seems to be much more accurate. When a server is down, the favourites doesn't list it. I haven't seen a wolfenstein server appear on my favourites yet. There are a couple servers that used to house WW but are back to wolf - their probably the two uk servers that went off line. (did you notice that right when they left for greener pastures the players fell away like flies...) It's great to go in and see people playing every day again. Though maybe I'm just playing at different times now... I've finally got my key binds fixed for the new weapons. So I vote keep them as they are then I don't need to rework my config again!!!<G> Oh sorry that's :D to you Generation Ysters... I agree, the fire could be toned down some but not much. I still should be dangerous and respected. Though if you touch the edge as it has almost died out, it shouldn't take you down by 70-100 points. I mean you've got some pretty thick boots if your sporting spurs the size of Texas. I'd be just as happy if the fire stayed the same. I REALLY like that the medic tossing of the fire seems to be tied with the speed at which you can generate med packs. That just makes sense. The number of bottles left lying around should be reduced though I've not yet been able to use that to an advantage. Mostly becuase my binds were unworkable. You seem to slow down tooooo much when you get hurt. If you are at 85, I don't think you should be able to tell a difference. How does that work, if you start at 110 and drop to 85 is the speed the same as if you had started at 100? Playing 1 on 1 in hacienda I finally understand why the flag is so far away. It allows the single defender to regen back to 70 health by the time you get there. So it is always an even shot at taking the governors waiting room. Though it is hard to take it as a minor and if you go as anything else, you won't have time to kill yourself and make it back before the person has regenerated. Dunno. I wish I was better at head shots... I'm still proud of myself - doing well enough to be accused of cheating is kind of like getting a Badge of Honor. I just wish I could do it consistently and Gringo didn't pound me into the dust when I play againt him! BTW Gring - the straffing technique helped a lot!!! Anything else.... Um... I like the great air time you get when blown to smithereens.... uh - I suppose the new spawn point is better in the town map. I even spawned on the saloon roof once... HEY, I know what I was going to suggest. Hewster, you provide a sample server config file and a default map rotation. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE add the CP modes to the default map rotation. I went through the town's CP mode just by myself and I think it would be a blast with a bunch of people. Could you add it to your beta server or lone wolf? If CP mode hasn't been played much, now is the time to do it. AND to most people it would appear that you've added a whole new level of functionality to WildWest. It was always there but the fact that it is not in the default file means that no servers have been setup to use it. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! |

Thanks for the props Queeg! Yeah, to get to the next level, you absolutely have to use strafe. I learned that in Kingpin when people were running circles around me, literally :). Now I just have to set up a walk button. About CP, can you vote for that game type on Lone Wolf for example? Never tried, but I know that's a vote option. |

It's not a good sign if people feel they're getting cheated. I think the spur sound will have to be constant. No matter how you move, it should make some kind of sound. The gap between experienced players and newbies could grow too large to move them up the ranks. I can see it now, everybody walking around or crouching, and newbies running at full jingle getting blasted. I found that I started creeping quite a bit, and I'm not too afraid of a gunfight :). Personally, I like having the stealth aspect, but what I like more is having people to play against. Will it make the learing curve too steep? |
It doesn't matter what game you play, if your good, your a cheat. One thing I did to combat this was register the "EL" tag with punkbuster. I did that a while ago as some of the Amigo's were accused of cheating. Thing is though besides the TNT cheat there isn't to my knowledge any other cheat which can be used in WW. And if there was I wouldn't be telling anyway. Last thing I want to see is WW end up like CS. The cheats available for that, well they're forever growing in number. It just ends up spoiling a good game and causes ill feeling. I'm not blowing my own trumpet here but I am good, I have my bad days as well, I have 109 playing hours experiance just in WW alone. (When you look at the tables the amount of hours played is actually a total amount of time spent playing ALL online games.) There has been many a time in the early days I was accused of cheating, if it's going to happen it will. I think your right there though Gringo, there will be a gap between noob's and experianced players, but that happens with any game. Only thing you can do is when there's a quiet moment show the noob's some tricks. That's what I do and before you know it they're practicing away to improve their game play. :rock: |
We need a good players guide, so noobs can read up on the tips and tricks ect. Dragon wrote one on his forums for version 1.14.. I'll ask him if he would like to write an official one for 1.4. Dragon ... would you like to write an official players guid for 1.4 ? full credits will be given ect :) I'll look into the flame power before we do the public release.. currently I feels it about right to me, I die about 50% of the time that I get hit by one. |
To be honest I quite agree with you Hewster the fire is ok as it is. Who ever heard of running through a fire an not getting burnt? I noticed if you are on fire and you run about the damage isn't fatal, you just about survive the ordeal. I think I would leave it as is. It's can't be abused so I think lowering the damage rate would just spoil the effect. Oop's i'm giving my tricks away again. :uhm: |
Oh, and I finally found out to how to get to the top of the crate. Same guy showed me after I showed him my best spots. All in all it was a VERY fun evening... Which is probably why I counldn't fall asleep till 3. |
I'd be happy to work on a new 'help' file, but would like all other vet's to add their 2 cents too. (as a veteran on both wolf (original beta tester) and west (1.4 beta teater :rolleyes: )) I tend to try to help out the 'new folks' especially w/ the new version and all the additions. It's kinda fun, I get owned now by many of the kids I showed the ropes too on wolf demo (Our forum is home of the legendary grudge) For some strange reason many retail players still like to 'slum' on our demo server & it's a blast. As to the locator when you global voice chat, I've noticed that occasionally but it's never consistent enough to track down (maybe on game out of 25+ ???. As to folks w/ different names for wild west, I fully understand getting a 'western flair' for the game. My usual name for Wolf is TheDragon, but I gave it a spanish 'twang' to El Dragon for Wild West. What I recomend, both her and on our forum, is that folks put their gaming aliases in their signature (as you can see in mine) this leads to less confusion, both on the forum and the fields. ... if only showing signature was a default setting as on our forum, I frequently forget to check the little box. |
Well one of the bugs I found out by accident was the actual piano player. Shoot him twice, come out of jail, and throw 1 ****tail at him and watch what happens. It kills him 4 times with one ****tail, Watch the messages you get on the screen after you've thrown the ****tail you'll see 4 of them scroll through. Hewster knows about the bug now but if you want to try it go ahead, oh by the way when he falls down dead, the piano player not Hewster, :D you explode three times, for those of you that didn't know.:rock: |

PB kicks me Is it me, Hewster, you are looking for? I have serious probs not to be kicked off by PB. For now nothing helps. No manual update to the letest files from www.punkbuster.com keeps me on lonewolf. There is some Server disconnected ... PB INIT Failure or ..This PB Server requires (Ai315, Cl034) Error loading pbag any time I am on lone wolf. Is there any special version of pb I didn't see anywhere yet? PB works flawlessly with RtCW or ET or anything else. Or may this depend on playing WW on my linux box? For the moment I have no more ideas... So I couldn't contribute to testing yet :-(( |

Do you you have a vaild "CD KEY' because every time you tried to join the game I was in PB stated you were kicked due to you having a Invalid CD KEY...? Maybe I am wrong If I am I appologize.... Just a thought - if your CD KEY is correct - does anyone else have access to it? i.e. a sibling or friend who might have borrowed the game. I believe that you can only log in with one account - so if someone else is using your "key" already, then you'll get kicked for an invalid key. This is why the ECA has cited the use of a key generator (that's what people use to duplicate keys in order to play a copy) as something that should not be used as it can duplicate a valid players key - so the innocent player loses out. |
Hello guys, it's a great great new version of wild west and i think it's the best version ever. I really love the new sound. Thanks to a very competent gamemaker Hewster. Till now i haven't found any bugs besides thoose already mentioned in earlier post. But i have to mention a problem about all theese people who is trying to logon but then immediately disconnected because of wrong version etc. You just see their name at the screen and then many times never see them again. A lot of people playing RTCW say to me that they tried to install the game but it didn't work :confused:. To get more players we of course have to make advertising where we come and second the game must be easy to find/download, install and play. I think that the-wildwest.co.uk has an brilliant design but i think that the downloadpage could be much more userfriendly. For instance split the page in two clear sections or two pages - a serverdownload and a clientdownload. Especially it is very importan for the cliendownload that there is a short and very clear description of how to do. I think that many potentiel ww-players are confused and leave without installing or after installing wrong version and then disconnected. I think they is confused when they see the downloadpage about betaplayers, version a and b, patchchanges, linux, servers etc. Basically the clienside only has to contain the following: To play Wild West you have to download and install 2 files: WW112.exe and WWpatch140.exe (see the downloadlist below). To play WW you must have installed version ??? of Wolfenstein. A link to the installation instruction. After my opinion no need for more information on that page :rolleyes:. I hope we can get more players in the future. One day i talk with a clan at RTCW (I think it was LHW, but i'm not sure??? perhaps some of you know? It wasn't dsb or el clans) and it was damm funny cause suddenly 3-4 of the players wrote a lot of different WW-expressions like "too many bullit i cant move" etc. I don't remember theese expression as good that they did :eek: :eek:. Soo there must have been people and clans playing this game a lot before i joined it. Perhaps we can find some of theese people again. WILD WEST dk |
...kicking me out First of all: thanx for your help @vonner and @[DSB]Cire I bought RtCW short period after its release and still hold the original copy. So nowbody else has the key. It was never a problem playing RtCW MP - I just had to enter the key once cause the linux install doesn't ask for it. I found out that WW seemed not to find this key (which is set under RtCW) so i manually entered it. There the mess got into second stage: Now, yes right now it complains "invalid CD-key". I feel like a total idiot. The key is correct, its unique and mine. Verifying is ok, but logging in @lone wolf doesnt work. After these troubles I connected to mp_beach in RtCW MP and everything worked perfectly. Then I successfully joined WW on lone wolf via RtCW Interface (I usually startet WW wolfmp +set fs_game WildWest). No complaint for an invalid CD_key anymore. OK. Then PB tried to download files failed and kicked me. I'll turn off my firewall and try again. Next step could be a reinstall - maybe my pb is somehow broken. Still no WW isssues. Sorry. |

I had the Invalid CDKey issue because I entered the CD Key in Wild West. I got up and running following Hewsters instruction to copy the cdkey file from main into the WildWest directory and mark it as read only. It's worked ever since. Personally I think this is similar to a PB issue my friend had and we had to forcably re-install PB to get it to work. Now, this post is not off topic because I wanted to remind Hewster that he had told me he needed to remove the "Enter CD-Key" menu option so that people would not have this problem. I can't check the game at this point, so I'm putting the reminder here. |
Just a thought.... Hey Hewster, just a thought. Could you get the admin of the Test server to change it's title to include (for Official Beta testers only) or something to that affect? I've had 3 members of my forum, send me a pm for they've tried to connect to that server seeing that is was the only WW server w/ people on it (very common currently, ya load it up, ya see several empty servers and several on one and hit connect because it looks like it will work) The other possibility (and I'm not fond of this till official release is to add a link to the updated test files (only w/ your permission)) |
no more kicking me off Pow, now I am on at last! Still cannot believe I can join testing now: I cannot figure out what the problem was with my install, so I *simply* reinstalled all RtCW/WW/PB stuff with patches etc. - til now everything seems to work fine. So my personal testing may begin now. The first impression is -much- fun playing WW - it really has the atmospehere of - lets say Sergio Leone classics and a series called "Western von Gestern" I saw on german TV in the late 80ies... I really like it. Yet I only think the grenade is maybe too powerfull - it blows up every human being in the range of 10 meters? |
X: Actually that's what my friend did too. That was how EvenBalance said to install PB for RtCW. Reinstall the 4.1 patch. I don't see a posting for this yet. So, I'll post it. It seems like a feasable bug. If a person who lobbed a fuse bomb was shot, the bomb immediately would blow up. No delay. As if the shot, cleared the bomb's timing variable. So, as quickly as it reflexes would allow it to be done, you'd have throw, bang, boom. We noticed this and stopped play to test it. We duplicated it a bunch of times but had to give up testing due to lag setting in. two of us had a volley rifle aimed at the tosser's head and we pulled the trigger as soon as the person threw. The bomb blew immediately but the person did not die. Volley Rifles in the head at 5 paces would kill no matter what your health. Eventually the person did die during one of our tests but that was after lag set in... ----- "A cushion, a cushion! My kingdom, for a cushion" - P. Revere:spank: |

I'll try it again with someone some time. I wasn't the one who noticed it and called for playing to playing but I was the one who shot that person if memory serves...and I said hey, you're right that was really fast. How long of a delay should there be? Is this a variable the server could override? Is there anyway to affect that? What does it look 3rd person like if their bind is setup to hold the grenade a second or two before letting go? That's the only way I know to get the grenades to blow up in the air every time. Maybe that was found to be the source of the behavior and why it was never reported. Though I don't know how that character survived us shooting him... |
I tried the bang bang bom 2-3 times but i'm not sure whether it was in ww or in rtcw. I think it was in rtcw soo perhaps it is a generel aperiodic bug in the game. Wild dk |

Just a little: When nobody else was on lone wolf I switched to spectator mode in order to take some screenshots of the map. I found myself in a room in company with the governor and his daughter and could not get out of it (I think at least the first flag inside the fort had been taken by the cowboys at this point of the game). Looked to me like the room lacked too walls you normally don't see in the game - this made a strange effect like motion-blur when moving in the room. |
The spectator spawning points in that map are strange. For instance if the objectives are not accessable (first flag not taken) and you are the only one in the game, you are stuck in the chain room with the chained up girl. Since the doors are not open and you can't get throught the grill at the top you don't get to roam around the map. But I think both of these issues are minor map issues and not really bugs in the new 1.4 code. Xebeque you should try it again with the 1.14b code base and see if you experience the same thing. Then you'll know if it is a map problem or a code problem. |

As to the Spectator mode on canyon map, bolty has admitted the problem (only map I don't have decient photos of and a 'flyby vid from start to objective.) As to the premature nades, I've noticed this occasionally but have not been able to duplicate this due to server lag between myself and the others atempting to shoot me after I prep it. |
