WildWest Public Beta Released!

The public beta version of
WildWest Version 1.6
is now available for download!

We are aware of a minor issue with the spawn flags in the Mine map, but other than that, we think all major bugs or issues have been fixed.

PLEASE NOTE*** This is a public beta, and as such, there will most likely be at least one more build required to call it "done". The version is pretty much in its final form, and no other major changes will be made.

What you see is what you get.

Some new maps are included: Macho Grande, BoulderDash, and Mountain Assault. The Mine map has also returned to the rotation.

You can now shove another player using the Use/Activate key (same key as used to open doors).

A volley gun head shot will gib the other player.

The /kill command has a 3-5 second delay on it, so don't wait till the last second for flag respawn purposes.

The Windows installer can be found here:

http://www.the-wildwest.com/files/be...West1_1613.exe

The Linux Zip file can be found here:

http://www.the-wildwest.com/files/be..._Linux_mac.zip

These are full install builds, and are over 200MB, so please allow enough time to download them. If you wish to be able to play both Version 1.5 and Version 1.6, then you will need to make a copy of your 1.5 Return to Castle Wolfenstein/WildWest and install the 1.6 version into the copy, leaving your existing 1.5 version intact.

If you use the zip file, make sure you unzip it into your Return to Castle Wolfenstein folder, NOT your WildWest folder. If you unzip it into your WildWest folder, it will make another WildWest folder inside of the existing one, and you will get an Invalid Game Folder error when you try to join the server!

Some players have reported experiencing problems joining the server due to PunkBuster issues. A zip file containing the latest and greatest PunkBuster files can be downloaded here:

http://www.the-wildwest.com/files/PunkBuster/pb.zip

Extract the files into your existing PB folder and you shoud be able to join the server.

The Public Beta servers can be found at:

European servers - 217.115.204.204:27960

81.169.149.208:33333
0r

American server - 67.15.21.118:27960

If you experience any problems with the zip file or Windows installer, please post in this thread.

Thanks

Iggy

Ignacio , Queeg,Hewster,Rosie,Angel,Dragon...

might a bug fix list since testing beta be option ?.....so people can verify that its actually working so people can make some feedback?

i know mayor issues are not gonna be changed but in dragons case of the 1.6 testing with screenies , could it be usefull instead of finding leaks so when u release it no other "additional" problems are an issue? / might stick in a public beta feedback "hint"

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

Good work all - 1.6 is looking really smooth! And great to see the mine back!

Can anyone tell me why I am getting kicked by PB when trying to join the Public Beta Server. It suggest I have no valid CD key entered. From what I remember of previous versions it only worked if the CD key was left blank. However on 1.6 beta I cant find the option to input CD key. Any ideas?

Otherwise fantastic - 3 of us checked out the maps on the LAN here and all are impressed with the improvements!

Thanks!

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

oops ezposse, you need the cd key for your RtCW (it sounds like you may have either moved it or deleted it) If so then you may need to re-install your RtCW.

Also to note folks, you will need the comercial version of RtCW, this will not work with the demo versions of RtCW.

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

Hi Dragon,

Thanks for the thought! Sounds like its linked to the way I have installed 1.6. Basically I have attempted to keep a working 1.5 but this is probably the issue.

I'm away now for a couple of weeks but will have another look when I'm back and look forward to some full on battle action down the mine!

Thanks

Ezposse

This is wrong! You dont need a commercial version. You need only wolfmp.exe (which you can get for free from the wolfenstein updates), the PB files from evenbalance.com and the WildWest mod.
There are also servers where you dont need a CD key.
If somebody needs some help with installing - just PM me - its not illegal! All your friends are able to play WW eventhough they didnt bought RTCW!

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

ah here's what ya need to do if you want to have both the beta 1.6 and 1.5

(my bad I have mentioned it to my testers but forgot to mention it here)
  1. rename you're 1.5 version of wildwest directory from wildwest to wildwest1_5. If you've already removed it you can redownload it, go to step #7,1. Then reinstall 1.5.
  2. download and save the install program (I've a folder in my RtCW folder named downloads for all my downloads, just easier to find that way)
  3. Install wildwest 1.6beta. Note, if you have older version of wildwest (even if you've renamed the folder it will see the wildwest executable in RtCW directory. don't worry about it. Also to note if you're running a version of windows that does not have WINDOWS as it's root main directory you may need to download and follow the instructions for the linux/mac zip file
  4. Let it overwrite the files it finds
  5. now you should have 2 folders of wildwest in your RtCW directory:
    • wildwest
    • wildwest1_5
  6. to run the 1.6 beta just hit your wildwest launch button
  7. to run the wildwest 1.5 version:
    1. rename wildwest to wildwest1_6
    2. rename wildwest1_5 to wildwest
    3. hit wildwest launch button
  8. to go back to the beta version just rename in oposite direction:
    1. rename wildwest to wildwest1_5
    2. rename wildwest1_6 to wildwest
    3. hit wildwest launch button
You should note that the version of wildwest you will be running will always be labled wildwest and the version you are not running will have a 1_5 or 1_6 after it.

There are a few minor glitches that we are working on but this is basically the final version of 1.6 (we are aware of the various glitches). Queeg is currently working on moving the list of new features from the design team area to a more public forum and when he does so, he or I will link to it here.

In general there are new maps, a return of an old favorite. and a new game mode, team death match. as well as other nifty touches and improved performance.

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

A couple of thing I have noticed:

Can walk through the shelf without books that is in the Govenor's office on Hacienda, as well as the rock behind the Cowboy's when they spawn (known about that one for awhile).

Oh, and I found a weird bug on Mine map where my grenades went missing when I through them at the ceiling.

@ Swisser: Greetings! :)

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

Just some adds to Dragons last post:
- call the folder WildWest instead of wildwest to avoid trouble with case sensitivity
- actually I run both versions from within one folder and it seems to work fine
- instead of renaming the folders you could solve this by using soft links - its IMO easier and less confusing.

Some suggestions for developers:
- I think it could be good idea to rename the mod folder to WildWest-$version - so its easier to use different versions at the same time. Also ASE would be able to start the different versions correctly.

- I wondered why ww_pak1613.pk3 is about 416MB big! IMO its not zipped correctly:
$ file ww_pak1613.pk3
ww_pak1613.pk3: Zip archive data, at least v1.0 to extract

but "file" shows for all other original RTCW pk3:
Zip archive data, at least v2.0 to extract

If you zip it correctly then it safes about 200MB HD space and maybe maploading will be faster -dunno.

It slows down map loading a lot since it needs to decompress the textures; seek time is much slower as well so just looking through the zip file for each file eats time. I believe they only used the "store" compression level because of this.

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

lol snake, both those have been around since the original. Seeing as they don't affect game play we let them slide. I'm curious where you found the 'hole' in the ceiling. i'm thinking you're tossing the nade too close to the sky box and that will eat them.

yep
maploading time = HD_loading_time + decompression_time

but zip_decompressing is very fast and the HD_load is double as fast if that pk3 is real zipped because the size is just the half!

I just benchmarked it here and noticed no difference between the real zipped pk3 and the just_storaged pk3.

my HD is UDMA6 - if it would be slower then the compressed version would be faster in comparison.
IMO the compressing doesnt slow down the loading time (the original game data is always compressed)
It depends on the relation of you HD/CPU power - for example if you would play it from a CD-media or USB-1.1 HD then the compressed version would be much faster! If you got fast HD then the loading time will be similar (if your CPU is not too weak)

Good idea but it is not how QIII based mods work. The fs_game parameter has to match the directory. That would mean that all of our maps would HAVE to be version specific. Right now we want to avoid that if possible.

The no-compression method was meant to address the much older machines that were being dropped during map changes as their CPUs were being pegged for a long enough time that they were not responding to the server. It was deliberate.

We do still have a few issues with the new delagged code,
specifically with animation smoothness....

Were you running a local server when you noticed this ?
if so, make sure you set "g_smoothclients 40" this will
help a lot.

Re: WildWest Public Beta Released!

hey guys just downloaded 1.6 windows version. however when i use ASE or Wofenstien to play online i get an invalid game folder and if i try to log on through the wild west 1.6 game itself i get kicked for having an empty cd key.

I have uninstalled wild west and rtcw and reinstalled them and still get the same problem. I have tried renaming the wildwest 1.5 folder to wildwest 1_5 before i installed 1.6 to possibly avoid any confusions and i still get the same errors.

i have verified that my rtcwkey file does exist in the main and wildwest directories, however there isn't anywhere in the 1.6 options to put my cdkey in? I also have updated my pb and extracted them into the pb folder.

Any suggestions?????http://forums.filefront.com/images/s.../confusedx.gif

rtcw and 1.5 both work fine and 1.6 works fine on a local server.

I will let Queeg or Hewster handle this one, but you should only have the RTCWKEY file in your Main folder, NOT in your WildWest folder. Are you using the EXE or the ZIP file?

Windows users should use the EXE file, not the ZIP file. I just spoke to Queeg about this and we are going to do some more testing to see if we can figure out what is happening.

Thanks for the feedback.

  2. the 1.6 installed into you're RtCW directory (If you renamed 1.5 directory then both directorys should be in RtCW directory)

nope the 1.6 beta release is a full version (we are working on the final tweeks of minor bugs but wanted a heavy runthrough to see if anything got past my test team. )

I'd recomend reading through post #16 if you wish to have both the 1.5 and the 1.6 beta on your system. (currently there are 3 servers running the beta and the rest are 1.5, with volume varing in both as to players.)
I'd recomend using ASE to find out which server/version is happening when you try to join.
