*Beware!!!!*

Thank you all for bringing this to our attention. This seems to be a new issue that just popped up, so we think something may be awry on the server side. Both SCI and the PunkBuster crew are currently investigating this and we hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

This appears to be a firmware issue with certain brands of broadband modems. The new Gamespy SDK apparently has triggered a bug in the firmware. This didn't happen in 1.7 because it used the older Gamespy SDK. At this time, all we can do is urge people to upgrade their firmware. Otherwise, as other games upgrade to the new Gamespy, you'll continue to see this problem.
Becareful because this can risk your honor.

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Is this the "Unknown Reason" kick?

soloman02 August 16th, 2003 12:03 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

whenever i get on a 1.9 server, i am dropped, is this the reason y that happens?

If it is the reason, that really sucks, cause i have a Linksys BEFSR41 - EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch AND the latest firmware. oh well, like i said in my other posts, i guess i'll have to wait til 2.0 or higher :( :'(

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Or you can upgrade! Less time to wait :)

Re: *Beware!!!!*

UPgrade??? upgrade what?
my comp?
my router?
All of the above??
 :agreed:

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Your router should be upgraded. Yeah, a new pc would be good, but that's really all that needs to be upgraded or else you will be booted from servers until version 2.0 comes out.

soloman02 August 17th, 2003 12:27 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

could my router also be the reasson why i can't view the servers, when i click refresh list? if so, that would kill two birds with one stone :)

Joe_Napalm August 17th, 2003 07:37 PM

It's two separate issues.

1. SCI and Punkbuster have found a problem with a setting in PB causing the "unknown reason" kicks. It is not a problem on official servers and, on some unofficial servers, it's been resolved.

2. Some broadband modems will cause you Internet connection to drop if you play AA:O. Abraxas recommended upgrading your modem's firmware. If your experiencing this problem (few are), contact your cable modem's manufacturer for more info.

Again, these are two separate issues that are not related to each other. In other words, the "unknown reason" kicks have NOTHING to do with your cable modem's BIOS.

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Like Joe Napalm just said, it's your firmware... I would just recommend getting a new modem with different firmware. I've got a motorola cable modem and I rarely get dropped from servers.

soloman02 August 18th, 2003 01:14 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

im a cheapskate, is the motorola cheap? my two probs are i get dropped from everyone, doesnt matter whether they are official or unofficial), and i cant see the servers, i have never lost my connection the the net(thank god :) )

i dont have firmware for my cable modem, you must mean the cable router...right?

Joe_Napalm August 18th, 2003 05:22 PM

The cable modem and router are two different animals. I have an RCA cable modem where the cable coax comes in and then transfers the signal to a CAT-5 cable. From there I have it running into a Linksys router where I then distribute it to 3 PCs. I have no problems with AA:O.

:furious: :furious:

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Well if you want to get specific, I got a "Motorola SB4200 SURFboard Cable Modem" and it was $140. I have a router too and I haven't lost my connection from any servers since 1.9 was released.

soloman02 August 19th, 2003 02:02 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

well, i've got the basic modem that comes with comcast/ATT cable with a linksys router

1SilentShadow1 August 19th, 2003 08:43 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Get a new modem - that's all that I can tell you. Search for prices on www.pricegrabber.com .

Crack_Mite August 19th, 2003 09:06 PM

I've got a Motorola SurfBoard BF4100 cable modem to a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router w/4 port switch and have 3 puters on it and have only been dropped once on a leased Mountain Pass SE server right before the Official Servers came up. But since the Official Servers have come up, I've never been dropped and can see all the servers on the list. Only problem I have is all the NONE servers popping up too. Gets very aggrivating having to scroll down past them.

1SilentShadow1 August 19th, 2003 09:45 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

The none servers are servers that have not been authorized yet. But the point is that any motorola cable modem will work with aa without you getting dropped.

I had the smae prob it happened when I deleted my firewall I had and when i deleted it, it closed all my ports as its dying attempt to save my puter. so i reinstalled my firewall and it worked!

1SilentShadow1 August 20th, 2003 10:04 AM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Lol it closed all the ports! Well that's good if you ever get a virus that deletes firewalls/anti-virus.

mEkImIrMe August 20th, 2003 11:27 AM

Yea LOL I got a 2 messages today saying RE:AAMEBER I opened it scanned it and sure enough it was a virus.

GeorgeWS(baron) August 20th, 2003 01:45 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

No shadow, it did not close all the ports just the ones that ALL my games seem to use. so i could still use the internet, but not any of my games worked. Shadow, do you ever play AA or just live on the forum here?

1SilentShadow1 August 20th, 2003 07:08 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

I play about half of the time - live on the forums for the other half.

mEkImIrMe August 21st, 2003 07:29 PM

LOL that is really wierd

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Firewalls can be good for the most part, but they really are bad when you uninstall them.

Smitty025 August 24th, 2003 04:36 PM

yea i get alot of problems with norton firewall... so i dont use it anymore. I use either zonealarm or mcaffee

SSJ_SaGE_980 August 24th, 2003 05:30 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

i would use macafee i think its better

1SilentShadow1 August 24th, 2003 06:35 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Mcaffe deceives you by giving you so many things on "Mcaffe firewalls are superior!" and crap like that. What I like about norton, you can set it up and it will never have a pop up about a security alert ever again. There are no advertising like Mcaffe does. They do that to retain their customers. Norton may be expensive, but they've got an overwhelming number of features, and don't advertise, and overall is a great firewall/anti-virus combo. I've got a router and a software firewall.

Forum_Azzhole August 24th, 2003 06:44 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

My recommendation would be to not run any of that software firewall crap. Why do you need something taking up precious memory and processor resources to lower your AA:O FPSs?

Rather, you should be using a router with Network Address Translation (NAT), which--in it's design--acts as a hardware firewall.

Looks like my work is done here...

1SilentShadow1 August 24th, 2003 06:51 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

I have a hardware firewall, but for security issues I also run a software firewall. I have 1GB of ram and lots of virtual memory and even when both are running, I have about 87% of resources left.

soloman02 August 24th, 2003 08:14 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

well, the hadware firewall is good for all of us who DON'T have 1GB of ram otherwise, get the software.

1SilentShadow1 August 25th, 2003 04:07 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Lol people here are talking about getting 8gb of ram!

Smitty025 August 25th, 2003 04:39 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

well i usually turn it of while playing aa because i also have a firewall on my router so i dont really need a software one but i use it for extra protection whenever i can.

1SilentShadow1 August 25th, 2003 04:59 PM

Re: *Beware!!!!*

Yeah but whenever I run my server, people try to hack my home network so I have it running all the time.
