Starband connection?

Ok, I signed up for the beta but, I have a few questions. I have Starband satellite internet! As such my pings average 600! Yea, kinda poor, but as an avid FPS/RPGer, I think you should explore how "playable" your game is over this medium! http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/biggrin.gif http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/biggrin.gif http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/biggrin.gif

Don't you? http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/wink.gif http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/wink.gif

Now, before you delete my beta app off the planet... I also have 56k analog, 56k over my ISDN, And 128K ISDN. Kinda gets me to be 4 testers in one!

Well connected aren't I? http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/redface.gif

Anyway, seriously, do you think you'll find room for a "starbander"?

actually Mikabl, Hap said a while ago, buried under all these damn threads somewhere, that he was looking for people who were at the bare minumum specs to test the game. I mean after all it's not like EVERYONE has broadband and if you wanna make it so people can play... anyway you get the idea. Search through Hap's posts for a better answer but I wouldn't worry about it, just keep your fingers crossed like the rest of us.

Good Luck

Headmagnet is 100% correct.

If you have access to 56k somehow and it is a stable 56k, you should join the test.

I need to remember you. I know how badly Starband suck, NO AMOUNT of netcode can fix that. I have pretty much disregarded the wireless ISPs: Starband, 19.2k CMPD, and Ricochet (too bad they are out of bidness). Still, you are now my "worse case scenario". If Purge is even marginally playable on Starband... well then I did a good job. http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

But since you have ISDN single and dual channel, you r0x0rz. HEHE!

Damn, I knew I should have asked Bulldog to put in comments box in the beta signup. Okay, you don't get selected, remember to remind me.

Hey Hap, ok I'll remind you! http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/biggrin.gif Just remind to shutup if I remind you too much!

You know I've found EQ, AC, and DAoC playable on Starband. However, when I play Q1, 2, 3, Unreal, and all the other FPS it's worthless. But yea... ISDN kick A

M

P.S. For a while I had Prarienet Wireless it was 384/384 worked good! Pings in the mid 200's It did have Weather Issues, fog, rain, snow, and the like But I moved to the big city! (rolf) now I got STARBANDED!!!!!

Wireless generally performs better than your average modem. I used the AT&T Digital Wireless stuff until they took it off the market. Broadband is definitely better, but the wireless worked alright as long as you weren't NATing (this was my case... they were already NATing; so I was NATing their NATing, it didn't work well, heh).

As for the Starband stuff, lol. The latency problems with going to and from a satellite are a joke. Definitely not an online gaming medium. http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

What kinds of connections are people on? I'm curious to see what the speed diffrences are in diffrent areas. How much you pay for it to would be interesting.

I'm in Southern Alberta, up in Canada and I pay 40 bucks a month (canadian of course) for a 1.5 down, and 512k up ADSL connection. T1's are mega expensive here (like 1750 a month Canadian) though I hear you can get them a lot cheaper in some locations in the states.

headmagnet March 19th, 2002 03:55 PM

Damn, well I'm paying 'bout 50-60$ / month for a 756/128k line. Real-World i get about 950K down and about 30K up. I'm also in the middle of Microsoft land out here (damn microsoft) and while I'm sure there are all sorts of damn wires all over the place, probably about 90% of the population is constantly online. So you cannot really get a hosting speed outta the house unless you got mad $. Fortunatly I have a friend in a college dorm who's currently letting me run a CS server outta his dorm room, and I'm just gonna (hopefully) switch it over to a Purge server. MMMMMM BANDWIDTH.........

Hap March 19th, 2002 05:37 PM

BTW guys, don't run a server if your cable modem/DSL company doesn't allow it. I don't want them harassing me about it.

If one were to consider hosting a Server HAP do you know what kind of bandwidth were looking at? I know with my DSL company I only get like 5 gig down, and 1 gig up a month, unless I want to pay the 10 bucks a gig overage. But with in those limits I can do what I want with it. I'm assumeing all graphics are run off the clients machine, and the server just updates locations, and tracks bullets and stuff. So if you have any guestimations as to the amount of data that would be going across that would be great. Also if you host a server does it have to be up 24/7 or could I host one dureing the day while i'm at work, then take it off line in the evening so i can play on my computer?

Thanks for the warning Hap, will keep that in mind. http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/wink.gif
