Has there ever been better gun battles in a game?

Well of course not silly!!! I have had far more fun with the shootouts in Max than any other game, period! The game makes a mockery of everything thats come before it. There may have been better action games (Uhh..maybe not)but the bullet time made this game a true wonder to behold! It may be called a gimmick by some, but its a gimmick that just made this game a unqualified must have!!

Trust me, the shootouts wouldn't have been half as interesting, had our level designers not carefully set everything up. Enjoyable shootouts can depend a lot on the setting. Keep this in mind, mod makers.

This is where the replayability comes from. Even though you may not want to play the same game again all the way, you just might try and play that shootout scene just a few times more, to see how many different ways you can complete it. http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

i would not call it a gimmick. it was extremely helpful and would often be the difference between life and death. all you ppl who claim you beat it too quickly or thought that bullet time was a gimmick (ironically, youre the same people), play it over again without bullet time or shootdodging. i guaruntee you that itll last a lot longer and you no longer have to watch those pesky bullets wizz by you in beautiful slo motion. good luck.

Yeah, I actually played the "The Garage" level a bunch of times, and it almost just as interesting every time, as if I had played it the first time...

The game architecture itself also helps alot. The whole cinematic gun-battle bit was well done, especially for a first-attempt at the thing. Look how many tries its taking to get superhero games right.

I have let myself get killed on purpose many many times so far just so I could try to complete the battle in a more cool and inventive way, never did a game wanna make me do this like Max has!!

No One Lives Forever on super spy mode has way more intense gun fights than max payne.
for one it is in first person so much more immersive, the enemies have much better ai, they duck in and out behind walls, throw down tables and chairs for cover, you can sneak up to them behind their backs, unlike in mp where once you enter the room the enemy starts shooting even when they don't see you.

I agree that other games have better AI, no doubt on that point but the bullet time feature in Max made each battle a memorable and stylish one unmatched in any other game I have played. HL had way better AI and the grunts in the game were awesome to fight but bullet time more than makes up for the somewhat lacking AI. Its brilliant!

I bought Max Payne at lunch...haven't even SEEN the game yet, kinda going crazy with anticipation, leaving work right after this post actually...

BUT, IMO the gun battles in the new Half-Life Blue Shift were outstanding!!

Stoked for Payne, I'm off! Happy gaming.

Half Life and No One Lives Forever feature some unforgettable battles accompanied by great music, which is certainly a plus. Max Payne's music has been pretty sparse. I'm on the last few levels now, with some nice electronic-sounding music playing, and it really adds significantly to my enjoyment of the game. It would have been nice to have this feature included all thru the game. However, Bullet Time evens it all out, and then some. I'm not gonna say which game is better or best of the 3, I'm just gonna dig 'em all, replay 'em all, and focus on the positives of each one. I'm extremely optimistic about the future of action games!
