Free FPS from US army

http://www.americasarmy.com/

so it'd seem..... the propoganda horse is in full stride....but as free stuff goes, this seems pretty good, only availabe within USA tho http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/frown.gif

Note: sorry to pimp out another game in the purge forum hap, delete it if you want, but i figured, its not a rivial to purge.

After we saw this, we were just saying the other day, how glad we are that we aren't making a Counter-Strike clone. I'm so happy Purge is totally original. Supposedly AA:0 has all its weapons balanced and designed by US Special Forces, so how can you argue with the "realistic accuracy" of these weapons. Like any of us would know how better than US SF about quickly a M16 kills.

Of America's Army: Operations is anywhere near decent, it will won't just C-R-U-S-H all the Counter-Strike clones, but perhaps Counter-Strike itself.

I'm sooooo glad we didn't do a Counter-Strike. Sometimes it feels great when your company collectively makes the right decision.

Well I have to say that it is pretty cheap of them to just keep the game in the US. I mean sure its made by your military but that really shouldn't matter.

Just another thing to add to my ever growing list of things I hate of the US Government.

Mit_h May 29th, 2002 10:51 PM

read the article a little more closely, you'll notice that you never actually get to kill other players, wtf is the fun in that? It'll be like playing a single player fps with stupid TKs to fu.ck you up. =)

Ya I read the article and it looks really interesting. I'll probably be getting myself a copy http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif.

Hap May 30th, 2002 09:17 PM

It does appear to be multiplayer but in all cases you play the US Army. *shrug*

Aromanov May 31st, 2002 12:16 AM

Anyone here think they could somehow get a double copy of the game and ship it over the border?

LaceyWare May 31st, 2002 11:11 AM

Make that two, cos I want one...

headmagnet May 31st, 2002 12:44 PM

well considering how quickly pirated stuff moves you should be able to DL it as soon as it comes out but if either of you have issue getting it let me know, hell i'll just burn you copies of it and mail it.

Aromanov May 31st, 2002 03:55 PM

Well if you could burn a copy that would be great!

Hap May 31st, 2002 04:06 PM

I wonder how they are going to limit non-US citizens. I read you should be able to download it off the site.

Well I'm not sure how some sites do it, but I do know that some only let people of certain countrys in. But if it is for download, then it would be available on many sites that they won't be able to control.

Asthane June 1st, 2002 12:36 AM

I didn't read into the site much, but all I recall seeing was that pre-orders, and more specifically, snail-mail packages, were limited to the US.

Could be wrong though.

I wonder what ELSE you get if you fill out your address. Maybe the package is personally delivered by an Army recruiter. http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

Here's a quote from the official site:

The Army will distribute America’s Army for *free* in response to requests at America's Army and GoArmy.com, through distribution partners that include leading computer game magazines, at Army events, at recruiting stations, and through internet download. The game is rated “T” for Teen by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board.

"through internet download" - looks like us foreigners will be able to get it anyway - and, if not, i'll just but the import PC Gamer from the US http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

I would bet this is coming out of the "advertising" budget of the Army. $7 million buys about... oh... maybe 15-30 primetime ads. That just means a few less "Army of One" ads.

So you need to think of it an another way of advertising. They probably get better returns on this game. (returns = recruitments & public relations) It's pretty smart, it is probably part of the Army's new marketing strategy. I bet they practically sponspored the "Combat Missions" show (my favorite reality show) http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

Exactly.... they have been puttin their army of one adds on gamer sites, this is the next step for that avenue of advertising, they see the gaming community as a good source of recruits, and i cant blame them with the new found lust most have for realism combat games

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. I never really knew how much it costs to produce games vs. commercial costs. Either way, free games make me happy http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/wink.gif

LaceyWare June 4th, 2002 12:03 PM

Free games make everyone happy. Don't they?

Well, so long as they're half-way DECENT free games...

Hap June 4th, 2002 02:34 PM

I think generally the Army is spending money a little more wisely, marketing-wise this way. TV advertising is cheap (relatively) in middle of the night and during certain times of the days, but unlike Coke, the Army can't just buy ads during these hours. There isn't much incentive to recruit middle-aged housewives or insomiacs. The "demographic" age that want watch stuff like TV major sports coverage, which are usually expensive to advertise on.

And look at free press this is getting. I wonder what Congress will do about "violent games" now?

-Blaze- June 4th, 2002 03:15 PM

yep, this is a much more productive way to spend some of their advertising budget. Alot better than pointless adds, atlest there is something of use commin out of it (how much use is unknown yet tho http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/wink.gif)
Its a step in the right direction. An abstract way of advertising thats actually working. Anyone remember 'cool spot'? 7ups attempt at gaming product placment. At least this is related to gaming, not some cheesy excuse to put 2 completely different things together.

dougy_fresh June 4th, 2002 08:19 PM

but it also comes to the line about violence coming from violent games.... obviously the army is largly about violence, but do you think they might get any problems from certain organizations about releasing violent games? I mean, of course there will always be violent games, but when its coming from a government orginzation instead of privatly owned company, could it bring some people to start about tax dollars being used for kids to learn about violence and start shootings, etc? i personally dont believe the games lead to violence unless the person playing it was already mentally ill in some way and should be getting help instead of blowing stuff up, but i thought itd be coo to get some other opinions and see what you guys think.

Cool Spot: hehe yeah i remember renting that haha. That was a weird game, much like dougy, but perhaps a bit cooler.(OUCH!!! that was cheap! http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif)

AND.... HOLY SH!T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do my eyes deceive me? Did Dougy just say something Intelligible?

On that note: Yeah I figure some people will argue it. I mean, some people argue everything, except how they constantly got high back when. Ever notice that? oh sh!t, i best not get off the subject(dougy knows i'll type forever on that). But yeah so there will be people argueing the gov't about the violence. Then again many people feel the need to blame games on things to make up for their poor parenting jobs. Thats not a cheap shot, just a simple truth. The others will be people wanting to follow precedence(sp?) so that they don't get yelled at for violent stuff.
But also, many others will stay quiet, because there are many people that won't catch on to the amry's scheme to recruit people. So many will stay quiet so that the army can recruit more. Even some of the "blamers" i bet will stay quiet so that some kids join. Especially since 9/11, A lot of people think that we need more people in the military, so those that have smarts, will know to not argue this one. If they do, then some of the dumber people will then be TOLD of the scheme, and thus play the game with the thought in mind, "Its only a a game, Its only a game, I won't join, I won't Join". Instead of just playin' it, then thinking... "hmm this is the army?. COOL!! and they pay for school? Wow, this is great!"

Well thats my thoughts on the matter. I for one will not argue it, I think its a very good tactic that they are using.

(if i have a typo... oh well, i don't wanna re-read this until i wake.)

Ironically, I think that's the point. "Smarts" part that is. Hardcore gamers are not exactly -- urrrmmm -- in the best shape. But they aren't exactly recruiting for Special Forces. They'll whip you into "good enough" shape to be a standard rifleman, then train you to repair tanks or something like that. Face it, with all the "just-out-of-high-school" and "jail-or-Army" soldiers in the Army, they have find some way to get some "smarts" amoung their ranks. Hey someone has to cook. http://www.voodooextreme.com:81/smile.gif

kourt Jester June 5th, 2002 08:59 AM

They'll probably make it so there isn't any blood, and land it a T rating, like MOA. That way it will be largely overlooked, even though you are shooting and killing people, because there are so many GTAIII's and SOF's to bitch about.
